Position Description

The Summer STEAM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for leading and managing the academic and instructional components of Manhattan University's Summer STEAM Day Camp for children ages 5–10. This role provides academic leadership, staff supervision, parent engagement, and daily on-site coordination to ensure a high-quality, safe, and engaging camp experience aligned with Manhattan University's mission and educational values.

The Coordinator oversees all academic programming and supervises a seasonal instructional team of approximately 10–20 activity teachers and tutors. This role requires the ability to manage both high-level planning and hands-on daily operations, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and sound judgment in a fast-paced, youth-centered environment.

The Coordinator works collaboratively with families, staff, and University partners to foster an inclusive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate learning environment while ensuring operational excellence, safety, and program quality.

Program Details

  • Camp Dates: Monday, July 6 – Thursday, August 13, 2026
  • Camp Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m
  • Early Drop-Off: As early as 8:30 a.m.
  • Late Pick-Up: As late as 5:30 p.m.
  • Camp Population: Children ages 5–10

Job Responsibilities

I. Academic Program Leadership

  • Ensure all academic and instructional camp needs are met.
  • Manage all academic aspects of the Summer STEAM Day Camp, including lesson plans, activities, and instructional materials.
  • Develop, coordinate, and oversee STEAM curriculum and lesson planning, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math activities, as well as structured free-play programming.
  • Ensure programming is developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and responsive to diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Teach at least one activity per day to maintain direct engagement with campers and instructional staff.

II. Staff Supervision & Training

  • Supervise, support, and evaluate a seasonal instructional staff of 10–20 activity teachers and tutors.
  • Develop and implement staff training, onboarding, and ongoing professional engagement.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, including weekly instructional and operational check-ins.
  • Coordinate staff and volunteer schedules to ensure appropriate coverage at all times.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative team culture aligned with Manhattan University's mission.

III. Operations & Coordination

  • Manage the academic camp calendar and coordinate shared facility usage.
  • Maintain daily attendance records for campers and staff.
  • Oversee academic supply ordering, inventory management, and material preparation in coordination with the Noncredit Programs Team.
  • Collaborate with operations staff on arrivals, dismissals, room setups, transitions, and daily logistics.

IV. Parent & Family Engagement

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for parent communication related to academic programming.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to parent inquiries and concerns.
  • Manage the camp’s parent-facing Facebook group and share daily updates and highlights of camp activities.
  • Communicate incidents, concerns, and program updates to parents in coordination with the Noncredit Programs Team.

V. Safety, Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure adherence to all Manhattan University security, child safety, and emergency preparedness protocols.
  • Document and report incidents, behavioral concerns, and safety issues following established institutional procedures.
  • Enforce camp behavior expectations and support appropriate disciplinary actions in collaboration with program leadership.
  • Maintain a calm, responsive presence during emergencies or high-pressure situations.

VI. Assessment & Program Improvement

  • Support end-of-program assessment, including staff feedback, parent feedback, and program evaluation.
  • Provide recommendations for program improvements and future offerings.

Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following:

Master’s Degree in education or a closely related field with at least two summers of supervisory experience in a comparable camp, school, or youth program setting, or Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field with experience as a K–7 teacher, after-school program director, or youth program leader, and at least two summers of supervisory experience in a similar setting.

Required Certifications

Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain before start date)

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience supervising staff in youth-serving educational programs
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff performance, resolve conflicts, and support professional growth
  • Experience working directly with children ages 5–10 in structured learning environments
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly with parents and guardians
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of children, families, and staff
  • Positive, approachable, and professional demeanor
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and adaptable mindset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies
  • Ability to work irregular hours as required by camp operations
  • Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions
  • Physical ability to carry materials up to 10 lbs, climb stairs, and walk across campus daily

Compliance & Safety Requirements

  • Must complete all required background checks and child abuse clearances in accordance with Manhattan University policies.
  • Must comply with mandatory reporter requirements and all institutional child safety protocols.
  • Required to complete pre-camp training in child protection, emergency response, and safety procedures.

Supplemental Information

This is a seasonal, temporary, contract-based position for the summer term. The expected start date is early to mid-June 2026, with the position concluding on August 18, 2026. Professional training and onboarding will be provided before the start of the camp. Opportunities for future seasonal or academic-year youth programming roles may be available.
