ABOUT THE ROLE
Patrol campus buildings, facilities, and grounds; observe, report, and investigate incidents and suspicious activities, ensuring the security and safety of property and community at MIU.
Responsibilities
- Patrols on foot and by vehicle; identifying intruders, recognizing safety violations, and controlling access to the campus.
- Ensure that doors and gates are locked after the close of the day's activities; arming and disarming security alarms; locking and unlocking buildings and facilities while identifying malfunctioning locks and calling the locksmith.
- Investigate and report unusual, suspicious, or dangerous circumstances; and removes safety hazards; looks for and reports to appropriate supervisor any unsafe conditions.
- Enforce campus traffic and parking regulations as well as federal, state, and local laws about the campus environment.
- Issues citations and evaluate situations and determine the need for outside law enforcement or involve other Campus authorities.
- Takes complaints from students, faculty, staff, and the public; investigate complaints, reports outcomes, and communicates information to parties involved.
- Communicate and cooperate with representatives of local law enforcement and fire agencies.
- Assist in traffic and crowd control for campus events and activities.
- Assist with campus emergencies, such as bomb threats, alarms, or accidents; administers first aid or CPR as required.
- Maintain logs and records and prepare incident reports.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Have primary law enforcement and security patrol principles and practices. Interpretations of federal, state, local laws and ordinances as applied to the campus environment.
- Posses basic record keeping and report writing skills.
- Experience in handling unpredictable or tense situations which may involve aggressive, angry, or mentally ill individuals. Understanding, interpreting, and applying various rules, ordinances, and laws; and exercising sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from various ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
- Able to handle the physical demands of an active, outdoor job. Performing basic first aid and CPR. Performing multiple tasks and conflicting demands.
- College coursework in law enforcement, administration of justice, or crime desirable.
