Overview:

Mackenzie Stuart is partnered with a leading provider of water chemical solutions to recruit for a key commercial role within their growing team. The client is seeking a Senior Technical Sales Engineer to provide technical sales, application support, and customer service for water treatment chemical programs across the East Coast. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of industrial water treatment chemistry, treatment processes, and customer applications. This may include cooling water, boiler water, wastewater, membrane systems, pretreatment, process water, and other industrial water management applications.

This role combines technical expertise, commercial development, customer relationship management, and field support. The Senior Technical Sales Engineer will work closely with customers, account managers, operations teams, laboratories, and product development personnel to design, implement, and optimize chemical treatment programs.


Role Description

This is a full-time hybrid role based in Boston, Massachusetts, requiring up to 50% travel, including overnight. The Senior Technical Sales Engineer will drive the sale and application of water treatment chemicals, develop technical proposals, troubleshoot customer systems, and help customers improve operational performance, compliance, reliability, and cost efficiency.

The role will involve regular interaction with industrial and commercial customers, including site visits, technical presentations, system evaluations, treatment program reviews, and performance assessments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop technical proposals and treatment programs for new and existing customers.
  • Support the sales team throughout the full sales cycle, from initial discovery and site assessment through proposal development, implementation, and ongoing service.
  • Conduct customer meetings, technical presentations, water treatment audits, and system performance reviews.
  • Evaluate customer water systems, operating conditions, chemical treatment programs, and process challenges.
  • Recommend appropriate water treatment chemicals, application methods, monitoring strategies, and service programs.
  • Provide technical support for cooling water, boiler water, wastewater, membrane, pretreatment, and process water applications.
  • Troubleshoot issues such as corrosion, scale, microbiological growth, fouling, foaming, poor water quality, treatment inefficiency, and equipment performance concerns.
  • Assist with chemical dosing, feed equipment, monitoring systems, testing procedures, and program start-ups.
  • Support product trials, field evaluations, laboratory testing, and customer demonstrations.
  • Analyze water quality data, treatment results, operating data, and key performance indicators to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Prepare technical reports, program reviews, performance summaries, cost analyses, and customer recommendations.
  • Work with internal technical, laboratory, operations, and product development teams to resolve complex customer issues.
  • Assist with developing and delivering customer training, internal training, seminars, webinars, and technical presentations.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of competitor products, market conditions, customer requirements, and emerging water treatment technologies.
  • Participate in industry conferences, customer events, trade associations, and professional networking activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of customer activity, opportunities, technical recommendations, and treatment performance.
  • Travel across the East Coast, including customer visits, site evaluations, start-ups, troubleshooting assignments, and sales meetings.
  • Work independently, take ownership of assignments, and remain resourceful and inquisitive when addressing customer and business challenges.


Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in water treatment, industrial chemicals, process chemicals, technical sales, applications engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working directly with industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, utilities, refineries, chemical plants, food and beverage facilities, power plants, or other water-intensive operations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with chemical dosing systems, online monitoring equipment, water testing, and treatment program optimization.
  • Familiarity with wastewater discharge requirements, customer sustainability objectives, and water reuse initiatives.
  • Experience using CRM systems, data analysis tools, or water treatment monitoring platforms.
  • Professional credentials or industry training related to water treatment, boiler systems, cooling towers, wastewater, or industrial process operations.


Compensation

$125,000–$160,000 base salary, with an on-target earnings opportunity of $150,000–$190,000, depending on experience and performance. OTE includes base salary and target incentive compensation. Actual earnings may vary based on individual and company performance.


Work Authorization

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Candidates who require employer sponsorship now or in the future may not be eligible for this position.
