Electrical Controls Engineer – Machine Systems

Machine Tool Research, Inc.
Rochester, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 4/16/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/12/2026

Design the electrical systems that power and control large CNC machines.

Create drawings, select components, and see your work through build, testing, and real-world operation.

Are You…

  • An electrical engineer who enjoys designing real machines—not just drawings on a screen?
  • Comfortable creating schematics, selecting components, and seeing your designs built and tested?
  • Someone who likes working closely with technicians and engineers on the shop floor?
  • Interested in complex, one-of-a-kind equipment rather than repetitive production systems?

If so, this could be a great fit.

Due to the nature of our work with government-regulated technologies, this position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.

What You’ll Do

  • Design electrical control systems for large machine tools and retrofit projects
  • Develop schematics and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Select and specify components including drives, PLCs, CNC systems, sensors, and safety devices
  • Create complete electrical documentation packages (schematics, BOMs, layouts)
  • Support panel build, wiring, and electrical installation during machine assembly
  • Assist with testing, troubleshooting, and system validation during integration
  • Collaborate with controls, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful builds
  • Travel to support machine startup and commissioning

This role doesn’t stop at design—you’ll see your work through build, test, and final delivery.

What You Bring

  • 5 years of experience designing industrial electrical or control systems
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Strong understanding of drives, motors, control panels, and electrical systems
  • Ability to read, create, and maintain detailed electrical documentation
  • Working knowledge of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, EtherCAT, etc.)
  • Hands-on mindset with interest in how designs perform in the real world
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Bonus Experience (Helpful, Not Required)

  • CNC systems (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain)
  • Machine tool or custom equipment experience
  • Exposure to system integration, testing, or commissioning

What’s in it for You?

  • Employee Ownership (ESOP) – Your work contributes directly to shared success
  • Variety of Work – No two machines are the same
  • Hands-On Engineering – Be involved beyond design
  • Collaborative Team – Work alongside skilled technicians and engineers
  • Meaningful Projects – Support equipment used in critical industries
