Job Summary:
The Nurse Manager of Emergency Services is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and coordination of nursing practice and operations within the Emergency Department (ED). This role ensures high-quality, efficiency, and patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies. The Nurse Manager collaborates with physicians, multidisciplinary teams, and hospital leadership to achieve clinical, operational, and financial goals.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Management
- Oversee daily operations of the Emergency Department, including staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Recruit, mentor, and retain nursing staff; conduct performance evaluations and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, professional growth, and staff engagement.
- Clinical Oversight
- Ensure adherence to evidence-based nursing practices and standards of care.
- Monitor patient volumes, acuity, and throughput; implement strategies to optimize patient flow and reduce wait times.
- Serve as a clinical resource and role model for staff; maintain competency in emergency nursing care.
- Quality & Safety
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.
- Investigate and resolve patient, physician, and staff concerns promptly.
- Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS).
- Education & Development
- Coordinate staff education, competency validation, and orientation programs.
- Promote continuing education and professional development opportunities for team members.
- Financial & Administrative
- Develop and manage departmental budget; monitor expenses and implement cost-control measures.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including patient records, incident reports, and departmental dashboards.
- Collaboration
- Work closely with physicians, case management, quality teams, and ancillary services to ensure seamless care delivery.
- Participate in hospital committees, task forces, and emergency preparedness planning.
Position Skills & Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must clearly demonstrate all required competencies. The education/experience, certifications, skills, physical demands, and work environment described below further define requirements associated with this position. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills required. Strong relationship and communication with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and clinical leaders required. Continual industry and job specific education required.
Education/Experience:
- Education: BSN preferred.
- Licensure: Active RN license in state of practice.
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience in emergency services; prior leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS required; PALS and TNCC preferred.
- Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities; proficiency in EHR systems; knowledge of healthcare regulations and emergency care standards.
