Essential Functions:
Cleans, secures and provides dietary care of animals in the ZooExamples of Work:
UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION
Reports births, deaths, injuries and irregular behavior of animals to the supervisor
Operates chopper, grinder, mixer, scales, blenders and related equipment
Delivers animal food to animal exhibit areas operating motorized vehicle as necessary
Picks up and disposes of animal manure, loading onto truck from wheelbarrows
Cleans food preparation areas
Cares for small animals used in animal diets
Patrols Zoo grounds to ensure the security of the property, gates and buildings as assigned
Performs dietary needs for Zoo animals and animal keeper work
Prepares food for animal areas under direction
Makes deliveries to City landfill
Serves food and water to animals when necessary
Learns to perform duties of Keepers as necessary, and assists their continual training effort
Performs related workPhysical Requirement & Working Conditions:
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds
Lifts and carries items weighing over 50 pounds in a team setting
Sufficient mobility, vision and hearing are needed to ensure a safe work environment
Works in the elements of the weather
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or the equivalent
Two years of documented experience (4,160 hours) working directly with non-domesticated/exotic animals in an institutional setting (i.e., Zoo, Aquarium or Wildlife Park, Pet Shop or Veterinary Clinic).
Other Minimums:
Must participate in an employee preventive health care program
Must participate in an operant conditioning program
Must work a varied schedule
Must participate in public education demonstrations and educational programs
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Equivalency:
One year of college with eight semester hours of Biology, Agriculture or Zoology.
One year of documented experience (2,080 hours) working directly with non-domesticated/exotic animals in an institutional setting (i.e., Zoo, Aquarium or Wildlife Park, Pet Shop or Veterinary Clinic)
