Director of Campus Safety

Summary

Louisburg College seeks a collaborative, experienced Director of Campus Safety to lead a comprehensive campus safety program that protects life and property, supports student well-being, and promotes a safe, welcoming residential learning environment. The Director oversees daily operations, supervises and develops a small team of full-time and part-time safety officers, and leads emergency preparedness, safety education, and continuous improvement. Building on the College's existing safety operations, the Director will strengthen written policies, officer training, professional standards, and communication to build confidence among students, families, facullty, staff, and College leadership.

This position requires an approachable, visible leader who exercises sound judgment, builds strong community partnerships, and balances effective incident response with prevention, education, and service. This Director will work closely with campus departments and local emergency response agencies to advance safety practices consistent with the College's mission and strategic priorities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Department Leadership and Professional Standards

• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate full-time and part-time campus safety officers, prioritizing professionalism, accountability, and respectful service.

• Manage staffing, schedules, and supervisory procedures to provide dependable coverage for campus operations, residential life, special events, and athletics.

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive policy and procedure manual addressing patrol operations, de-escalation, welfare checks, incident reporting, documentation, and the scope and limits of officer authority.

• Establish a documented officer training program that includes onboarding, continuing education, emergency response, and performance assessment.

• Establish consistant standards for uniforms, identification, equipment, vehicles, and professional conduct.

• Assess departmental practices against recognized campus safety standards and recommend a pratical roadmap for professional development, credentialing, and potential accreditation.

• Develop departmental goals aligned with the College's mission and strategic plan; administer the budget and recommend staffing, equipment, and technology investments.

Campus Safety Operations and Incident Response

• Direct campus safety operations focused on prevention, protection of life and property, and enforcement of College policies within the department's authorized scope.

• Oversee the response to reported crimes, accidents, injuries, fires, safety concerns, and other incidents; ensure timely documentation, appropriate referrals, and follow-up.

• Coordinate with local law enforcement on criminal matters and incidents requiring police authority or armed response.

• Conduct periodic safety assessments and coordinate corrective actions with Maintenance, Student Life, and other responsible departments.

• Oversee the operation and evaluation of campus cameras, access-control systems, and other security resources in collaboration with appropriate College personnel.

• Establish and monitor service and response standards, conduct post-incident reviews, and use findings to improve operations.

• Maintain effective procedures for after-hours escalation and leadership response to significant incidents.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

• Lead the development, maintenance, and implementation of campus emergency plans in collaboration with College leadership and local response agencies.

• Plan and coordinate emergency preparedness education, exercises, and campus-wide drills; document outcomes and implement improvements.

• Serve as an administrator in the College's emergency notification system and help coordinate emergency communication with the Vice President of Student Life.

• Serve as a principal campus safety resource during emergencies, supporting coordinated decisions, response, and recovery.

• Maintain strong working relationships and operational agreements with local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and emergency management agencies.

Compliance and Institutional Coordination

• Lead the College's Clergy Act compliance work, including preparation and dissemination of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, applicable crime-log requirements, and coordination of timely warnings and emergency notifications.

• Coordinate applicable safety reporting responsibilities associated with VAWA and work closely with the Title IX Coordinator on matters involving overlapping responsibilities.

• Maintain accurate records and coordinate information gathering across departments to support institutional reporting and compliance.

• Serve on the Behavioral Intervention Team and other designed College committees, contributing to coordinated prevention and response efforts.

• Advise College leadership on significant safety concerns, emerging risks, and recommended actions.

Community Engagement and Communication

• Maintain a visible, approachable presence on campus and build constructive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

• Partner with Student Life and other departments to deliver safety education for students and employees, including orientation programs, residence life staff training, and ongoing prevention initiatives.

• Maintain clear, accessible information about campus safety services, contact procedures, emergency resources, and available safety data in collaboration with College communications staff.

• Engage families through orientation and periodic updates about campus safety priorities, services, and improvements.

• Provide quarterly safety updates to Cabinet and brief the Board of Trustees as requested, addressing incident trends, training and drills, service measures, and progress toward departmental goals.

• Gather community feedback through an advisory group or other structured engagement opportunities and use that feedback to improve services.

Campus Safety Officers are required to work in adverse weather conditions. They may be required to stand on foot posts for extended periods of time and required to run certain distances in emergency situations. They may be required to subdue and detain individuals in emergency situations. They may be exposed to hazardous materials or chemicals. Campus Safety Officers must be capable of light work, exerting up to 20 pouds of forse occasionally and/or a negligible amount of forse constantly to move objects, climbing, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, talking, and hearing.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety, emergency management, or a related field (equivalent combination of education and experience considered).

• Minimum seven to ten (7-10) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, campus/public safety, or a security management, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or command role.

• Demonstrated working knowledge of the Clergy Act, Title IX, and VAWA/Campus Safety Act reporting requirements.

• Experience developing formal department policy manuals and/or leading a department through accreditation or standards-alignment process strongly preferred.

• Current or attainable certification in emergency management within the first six (6) months of employment.

• Valid Driver's license and ability to pass comprehensive background investigation.

• Experience working in or with a higher education or residential campus environment preferred.
