Overview
Lord of Life Lutheran Church, an inclusive and affirming ELCA congregation in Garner, NC, seeks a part-time Director of Music to enhance our traditional worship service through musical leadership and accompaniment. The ideal candidate is a Spirit-filled person with proficiency in both organ and piano, a strong understanding of Lutheran liturgy, and the ability to work collaboratively with the pastor and volunteers.

Status: Part-Time (10-15 hours/week)
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Worship Planning & Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee to select music (hymns, liturgy, anthems, etc.) that aligns with the Revised Common Lectionary, the liturgical calendar, and Lutheran theology.
- Provide organ and piano accompaniment for the Sunday traditional worship service (currently at 9 am) and other special services (e.g., Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent, Maundy Thursday, Easter).
- Lead and encourage congregational singing.
- Coordinate and schedule special music from soloists or small ensembles within the congregation.
- Choir Direction:
- Rehearse and direct the adult choir on a weekly basis; weeknight rehearsal dates and times to be determined in collaboration with the Worship & Music Committee and choir members.
- Select appropriate anthems and special music for the choir to perform during worship services, suitable for the choir's skill level.
- Administration and Facilities:
- Maintain the church's music library and track copyright licenses (e.g., CCLI, One License).
- Supervise the maintenance and tuning of all musical instruments, including the organ and piano.
- Manage the music program budget and submit requests for supplies or new music to the appropriate committee or council.
- Attend staff meetings and/or Worship and Music Committee meetings as required.
- Other Duties:
- Be available to play for weddings and funerals, with separate compensation typically negotiated with the family or funeral home (first right of refusal).
- Arrange for qualified substitutes when absent, ensuring all musical responsibilities are met.
- Maintain professional competency through practice and continuing education opportunities.
Qualifications and Skills
- A demonstrated personal Christian faith and a working knowledge of liturgy and worship practices, preferably within the ELCA.
- Proficiency in playing both the organ and piano.
- Experience in conducting vocal ensembles/choirs and leading congregational singing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and positively with the pastor, staff, and volunteers.
- Effective organizational, communication (written and verbal), and basic computer skills.
- A music degree is preferred, but relevant experience will be considered.
