What are the responsibilities and job description for the HORTICULTURIST ASSISTANT, CONSERVATORIES position at Longwood Gardens?

Longwood Gardens has an opening for part-time Horticultural Assistant to join the talented West Conservatory team. This position assists multiple areas including Bonsai displays, our waterlily pools, the Cascade Garden, and the West Conservatory. Duties are performed in interior and outdoor spaces.
Responsibilities include:
- All aspects of conservatory display maintenance including but not limited to planting, pruning, watering and fertilizing.
- Assisting with the upkeep and cleanliness of work areas and displays.
- Grooming and deadheading plants on display.
- Working with and around trucks, lift gates, forklifts, aerial lifts and utility vehicles.
- Supporting the day-to-day process of installing and maintaining interior and exterior displays and collections.
- Cleaning/scrubbing the display pools.
- Supporting the maintenance of displays in the 1906 restaurant.
The schedule for this position requires working an average of 24-28 hours per week, starting the workday at 6:30 AM.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Prior horticulture knowledge and experience, preferred but not required
- The ability to work independently and with a team
- The ability to work with ladders and aerial lifts up to 30 feet
- The ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
- The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- The ability to perform manual, repetitive tasks independently
- A valid driver’s license and ability to operate small handheld equipment
