Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance of the water treatment plant.
MAJOR DUTIES
Trains, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
Plans daily work schedules for assigned crews.
Establishes and maintains an overall maintenance and preventive maintenance program for assigned facilities and equipment; prepares maintenance reports and records.
Plans, schedules, and performs preventive and general maintenance and repair of treatment plant and related facilities and equipment; performs overhauling, repairing, and maintenance of pumps, motors, devices, air compressors, and other components of the water treatment system.
Requisitions materials and supplies in accordance with established procedures.
Maintains and promotes clean and safe working conditions; performs general day-today maintenance of plants and related equipment.
Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of water treatment plant equipment maintenance and repair principles.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations relevant to the treatment and distribution of water.
Knowledge of SCADA operations principles.
Knowledge of OSHA and other safety guidelines.
Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
Knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures.
Skill in the use of a variety of job-related tools and equipment.
Skill in the maintenance of water treatment facility equipment.
Skill in the supervision of personnel.
Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Water Treatment Plant Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include LOTO procedures, NFPA-70E guidelines, OSHA regulations, state and federal environmental regulations, operations and maintenance manuals, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related technical and supervisory duties. The variety of plant equipment contributes to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the maintenance and repair of plant equipment. Success in this position contributes to delivery of safe and regulatory compliant water to customers.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county personnel, vendors, contractors, and members of the general public.
Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, motivate persons, or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and climbs ladders.
The work is typically performed in a water treatment plant, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Maintenance Technician.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain Maintenance Technologist Level IV certification.
Required NC Class 2 Maintenance Technologist Certification
