Lili’uokalani Center (LC)

Informed by a deep understanding of the adolescent experience and grounded in Hawaiian culture, the new LC will provide Hawaiian youth with opportunities to connect to peers and mentors, receive supportive services, and discover pathways to passion, purpose, and prosperity. LC will be LT's signature youth development hub for culture, creativity, technology, and play and will serve as a resource center where youth can connect to vital support and a vibrant community. LC will be a safe space located in urban Honolulu where youth are inspired to pursue their dreams, including exploring pathways in the arts, sports, technology, and entrepreneurship while receiving wraparound support to help them reach their goals and become thriving adults. A primary function of LC will be to provide a space for young people to play, to learn, to find connection and inspiration, and to experience joy.

Currently under construction, LC is set to open in Spring of 2025.

Job Purpose

We seek a dynamic and passionate Part-Time Teaching Artist to join our youth center team. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and delivering an engaging curriculum leveraging our center's diverse creative spaces. The candidate should be able to inspire and guide youth in various artistic disciplines while fostering connections between visual arts, digital media, and STEM learning models.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a curriculum for youth ages 12-17 across multiple disciplines, including, but not limited to, woodworking, digital fabrication, photography, film, multimedia production, and visual and textile arts.
  • Utilize the available creative spaces such as the wood shop, fabrication studio (laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machine), photography and film lab, computer labs, and visual arts and textile studio.
  • Incorporate traditional Hawaiian arts and practices into programming and working with local practitioners whenever possible.
  • Integrate STEM concepts into visual arts projects, helping youth develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with LC staff to ensure programming aligns with the center's mission and goals.
  • Facilitate workshops, group projects, and one-on-one mentorship to engage and support youth in their creative endeavors.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Assist with outreach efforts to engage the local community and encourage participation in arts programming.
  • Manage program supplies and equipment responsibly, ensuring proper usage and maintenance.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements.

Other Duties

  • Contribute to the Trust's success by accepting new assignments, helping team members, learning new skills, and striving to improve team and organization results.
  • Evening and weekend hours are required as needed.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience working with youth in an educational or community setting.
  • Proficiency in multiple artistic disciplines, with a strong understanding of traditional and contemporary visual arts practices
  • Familiarity with traditional Hawaiian arts and cultural practices is a plus.
  • Experience with digital fabrication tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC machines
  • Ability to connect visual arts education with STEM concepts
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in curriculum development and lesson planning.
  • Knowledge of best practices in youth development.
  • Passion for fostering creativity and artistic expression in young people.
