Position Summary
The Sales Tax Accountant/Analyst is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate compliance with all U.S. state and local sales and use tax requirements. This role manages multi-state filings, reconciliations, audits, research, and process improvements to minimize tax risk and support business operations. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, deep knowledge of state tax laws, and experience working in a fast-paced, multi-jurisdictional environment.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Use Tax Compliance
- Prepare, file, and remit sales and use tax returns across multiple states, local jurisdictions, and special tax districts.
- Maintain detailed schedules, reconciliations, and documentation supporting monthly/quarterly tax filings.
- Monitor nexus exposure and assist with registration in new states as business expands.
Tax Research & Advisory
- Research multi-state sales and use tax rules, rate changes, and legislative updates to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Provide guidance to internal departments (AR, AP, Operations, Finance, Sales) on proper taxability decisions and exemption documentation.
- Review customer tax exemption certificates and ensure proper classification within ERP systems.
Audit Support
- Respond to state and local tax inquiries, notices, and audits.
- Compile supporting documents, prepare responses, and assist with remediation plans.
- Identify potential tax liabilities or refund opportunities.
Process Improvement & Controls
- Support ERP and tax engine setup, including tax code maintenance and rate updates.
- Assist with implementation and optimization of sales tax automation tools
- Recommend process enhancements to improve accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.
Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly and quarterly tax account reconciliations and journal entries.
- Analyze tax variances, trends, and financial impacts for management review.
- Support month-end close activities and provide general ledger accuracy related to sales and use tax accounts.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
- 2–5 years of sales and use tax experience, with strong knowledge of multi-state compliance.
- Experience with high-volume, multi-jurisdictional tax filings (100 returns/month is a plus).
- Prior use of sales tax automation software
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of U.S. state and local sales/use tax laws, nexus principles, and taxability rules.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data manipulation).
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage deadlines across multiple states.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Salary : $85,000 - $105,000
