Director of Accounting

LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking a Director of Accounting for a growing Troy, MI area client. The Director will be responsible for overseeing month/quarter/year close, financial reporting, A/R & invoicing operations, external audit management, internal controls, and lead an ERP transformation.

Responsibilities

• Direct the end-to-end accounting function, including billing activities, receivables management, cash application, and issue resolution related to customer accounts.
• Own responsibility for accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close cycles.
• Review and approve journal entries, ledger activity, and supporting account documentation.
• Ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled consistently and discrepancies are resolved promptly.
• Maintain integrity of accounting records and confirm adherence to professional accounting standards.
• Review financial performance results, assess fluctuations, and communicate meaningful insights to senior leadership.
• Assess existing accounting workflows and implement process enhancements to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
• Provide oversight and support for payment processing and other routine accounting transactions.
• Support complex accounting matters requiring professional judgment, including estimates, accruals, and valuation-related items.
• Coordinate with tax advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable tax obligations.
• Contribute to special initiatives, analytical requests, and cross-functional projects as needed.
• Build, mentor, and manage an accounting team, setting performance expectations and supporting professional growth.
• Support preparation and review of consolidated financial statements prepared in accordance with GAAP.
• Produce and review internal management reporting and external stakeholder materials as required.
• Establish and maintain formal accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
• Design, evaluate, and sustain a strong internal control framework.
• Drive consistency in accounting practices across multiple legal entities or operating structures.
• Research and document technical accounting matters, including revenue arrangements, internally developed assets, and transaction-related accounting.
• Serve as a primary liaison during internal and external audit processes.
• Partner with finance leadership on forecasts, budgets, and long-range planning activities.
• Oversee statutory reporting and audit coordination for domestic and international entities, including benefit plan audits.
• Act as the senior accounting resource for financial systems and data architecture.
• Oversee configuration and integrity of accounting data, structures, and reporting frameworks.
• Collaborate with internal teams and third-party advisors to improve automation, controls, and reporting functionality.
• Lead accounting execution for system implementations, upgrades, and integrations, including design, testing, and transition activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; graduate-level education preferred.
• At least eight years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, or audit.
• Certified Public Accountant(CPA) with prior public accounting experience required.
• Strong command of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.
• Demonstrated experience managing close processes, audits, and multi-entity accounting environments.
• Proven ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and partner with executive stakeholders.
• Experience supporting transactions, integrations, or organizational change initiatives preferred.
• High proficiency with accounting systems, enterprise platforms, and close management workflows.
• Advanced Excel skills and strong working knowledge of standard business productivity tools.
