ControllerOverviewReporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting and finance operations for a multi-entity, project-based business. This is a hands-on, process-driven role focused on building, managing, and continuously improving core finance and accounting functions at the operating level.The Controller will own key accounting processes including cash management and controls, accounts receivable and billing, accounts payable, job costing and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, inventory and fixed asset accounting, monthly close and balance sheet reconciliations, and support for forecasting and budgeting activities. This role partners closely with operational leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and timely insights into business performance.Key ResponsibilitiesCash Management & ForecastingManage daily cash activity, including bank reconciliations for all operating accounts.Develop, maintain, and monitor a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast.Payroll & Labor ReportingProvide backup support for weekly payroll processing.Prepare payroll and labor-related reports to support month-end close and job costing analysis.Revenue Recognition, WIP & Job CostingOwn deferred revenue, work-in-progress (WIP), and percent-of-completion calculations on a monthly basis.Ensure job costs are accurately captured and applied to projects.Oversee revenue recognition for project-based and service work in accordance with U.S. GAAP, including preparation of construction accounts receivable at month end.Accounting Operations & General LedgerImplement, manage, and improve day-to-day accounting processes across billing, collections, accounts receivable, accounts payable, job costing, inventory, fixed assets, and corporate credit cards.Ensure accurate coding, approvals, and timely posting of transactions to the general ledger.Maintain the general ledger, including preparing and reviewing journal entries and improving GL processes for accuracy and consistency.Month-End Close & Financial ControlsLead the month-end close process on an accrual basis, ensuring a timely and efficient close.Maintain detailed balance sheet reconciliations and supporting workpapers for all key accounts.Follow established close checklists and maintain audit-ready documentation each month.Prepare explanations for material variances and unusual account activity.Reporting & AnalysisProduce weekly and monthly job-level margin reporting.Perform monthly deep-dive analysis of labor costs and summary analysis of subcontractor expenses.Support operational and financial leadership with accurate, actionable reporting.Audit, Budgeting & ForecastingCoordinate year-end close and on-site audit activities, including preparation of audit schedules and responses to auditor requests.Assist with annual budgeting and periodic forecasting, including development of supporting schedules and variance analysis.Additional ResponsibilitiesPerform other accounting and finance-related tasks as assigned by the Vice President of Finance.Qualifications & Experience5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in an Accounting Manager or Controller role.Experience in construction, contracting, or project-based services environments.Direct hands-on experience with job costing, WIP schedules, and project margin reporting.Strong understanding of percent-of-completion accounting (highly preferred).Full-cycle accounting experience, including month-end close, general ledger reconciliations, AR, AP, payroll coordination, and inventory or materials accounting.Demonstrated success building and improving accounting processes, internal controls, cash management, and transitioning from cash to accrual accounting.High proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Word and PowerPoint.Experience using QuickBooks or similar accounting systems.
