Job Summary:

The Build Engineer II (BE II) is part of the engineering team, working directly under the Engineering Manager. This role involves close collaboration with both the sales and operations departments to ensure optimal communication across all project phases.

Key responsibilities for the BE II role include assuming engineering responsibility once a project has been awarded and developing comprehensive construction and project documentation for use by the operations team during system staging, installation, commissioning, and programming. Participation in internal peer reviews and adherence to AV9000 (AQAV) checklists, as elements of our quality management system (QMS), are essential aspects of this position.

An ideal BE II candidate has advanced skills using AutoCAD, Excel, and Bluebeam Revu for preparing detailed construction and system documentation. Meticulous attention to detail is required to produce thorough system drawings, thus streamlining operational processes and minimizing troubleshooting efforts during staging and field implementation.

Candidates for the BE II position must already possess and maintain recognized industry design certifications, including CTS-D and CQD.

BE II differentiators:

The activities listed below highlight key distinctions that separate the BE II role from the BE I and BE III roles.

  • Able to effectively oversee technical design and user experience planning for most projects, while continuing to build the expertise needed for managing highly complex and large-scale initiatives.
  • Exhibit a proven capability as the project engineer of record, overseeing and guiding a team of engineers responsible for preparing all necessary documentation for successful project delivery. This structure enables the BE II to manage multiple projects efficiently while facilitating strong company representation and knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers.
  • Provide backup engineering support as needed for enterprise accounts overseen by BE III.
  • Consistently make high-quality decisions and operate with a significant degree of autonomy.
  • Assess and mitigate risks related to system design, technology choices, vendors, and project scopes, proactively identifying potential challenges and escalating concerns to management as needed.
  • Mentor junior team members to support their development within the department.
  • Be an absolute champion of company processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Recognized as a subject matter expert across various technologies and best practices within the organization.
  • Generally, the BE II can manage most projects and enterprise accounts, while the most complex ones are usually handled by the BE III.

Summary of Essential Job Functions (BE II):

  • The BE II must be capable of independently supporting the majority of the company’s clients and will primarily be tasked with handling small to medium-sized projects while they grow their skill set to handle larger and more complex projects.
  • The BE II is responsible for handling all BE tasks associated with one or more Level 3 strategic accounts, ensuring consistency across projects within those accounts.
  • When assigned as lead engineer, initiate internal kick-off meetings with Solutions Architects (SA) and sales staff to gather information and identify any unknowns.
  • Work closely with SA’s to create accurate project documentation, especially when design changes are needed that impact the original Scope of Work.
  • Take responsibility for system design as well as document management, ensuring successful outcomes.
  • Develop a comprehensive documentation package tailored to the project manager's requirements and the designated project hours. This package typically comprises cover sheets, key plans, equipment floor plans and RCPs, elevations and sections, electrical and conduit layouts, speaker dispersion diagrams, viewing distance (DISCAS) calculations, projector throw distances, camera fields of view, conduit riser diagrams, plate details, signal flow diagrams, rack elevations, power load calculations, EDID plans, and other pertinent documentation.
  • All deliverables must comply with AV9000 standards and align with Level 3 drafting protocols.
  • Ensure completion of documentation within the deadlines established by the project team.
  • Create cable pull schedules, label extract lists, equipment power tables, network summaries, network schedules, and functional checklists.
  • Design private AV IT networks, from isolated control setups to Layer 3 managed networks utilizing VLANs, multicasting, and customer uplinks.

  • Conduct occasional AV9000 engineering reviews.
  • Maintain a broad understanding of industry solutions, including audio reinforcement, microphones, AV conferencing, video routing and distribution, IT/networking, control systems, and equipment storage.
