The Special Services Director provides leadership, oversight, and coordination for all programs that support students with diverse learning needs. This includes special education, Section 504, gifted education, related services, and compliance with state and federal regulations. The director works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, families, and community partners to ensure every student receives appropriate, highâ??quality services that promote academic, social, and emotional success.

Key Responsibilities

Pprograms, including Special Education, 504, Gifted, Dyslexia, and related services (OT, PT, Speech, Behavioral).

Ensure compliance with IDEA, ADA, Section 504, FERPA, and all state regulations.

Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices for service delivery.

Monitor program effectiveness and recommend improvements.

Staff Supervision & Support

Recruit, hire, evaluate, and support special services personnel (teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, psychologists, etc.).

Provide ongoing professional development and coaching.

Foster a collaborative, student-centered culture across all service teams.

Student Services & Compliance

Oversee the development and implementation of IEPs, 504 Plans, and individualized learning supports.

  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation, reporting, and data collection.
  • Coordinate evaluations, screenings, and eligibility determinations.
  • Support schools in implementing behavior intervention plans and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).

Collaboration & Communication

Serve as the primary liaison between the district and state agencies regarding special services.

Communicate regularly with principals, teachers, and families to ensure clarity and consistency.

Facilitate parent engagement and resolve concerns with professionalism and empathy.

Collaborate with community agencies, mental health providers, and service organizations.

Budget & Resource Management

Develop and manage budgets for special services programs.

Oversee allocation of staff, materials, and resources.

Ensure proper use of federal and state funds (IDEA, Title programs, etc.).

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field.

Valid state certification in Special Education and/or Administration.

Extensive knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and state special education regulations.

Minimum of 3--5 years of experience in special education leadership
