We are a growing real estate development and rental company operating across multiple entities with significant transaction volume. Our portfolio includes ground-up construction and stabilized rental properties. As we scale toward a $100M platform, we are strengthening our accounting infrastructure to support disciplined reporting, strong internal controls, and institutional-level financial integrity.
We are seeking a Controller to assume full ownership of all accounting operations and technical accounting matters, ensuring financial statement integrity, disciplined close execution, and strong internal controls as the company scales.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Controller is responsible for the overall integrity of the accounting function, including financial statement accuracy, internal control structure, month-end close, and team leadership. This role ensures that accounting operations are scalable, well-documented, and aligned with growth objectives.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting Leadership
- Lead, manage, and develop the accounting team (Senior and Staff Accountants)
- Ensure the team is properly structured with clear roles, accountability, and performance expectations
- Provide ongoing mentorship, coaching, and performance management
- Build and maintain a scalable accounting team to support company growth
Financial Statement Integrity
- Own the accuracy of the general ledger and financial statements
- Ensure monthly balance sheet reconciliations are completed and reviewed
- Maintain clean subledger-to-GL relationships
- Oversee intercompany accounting and consolidations
- Monitor loan schedules and debt compliance reporting
Month-End Close Ownership
- Design and enforce the close calendar
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end reporting
- Oversee accruals, adjustments, and review processes
- Maintain a disciplined close cycle (target: 10 business days or less)
Internal Controls & Policy
- Design and strengthen internal accounting controls
- Establish documented procedures and reconciliation standards
- Identify and remediate control weaknesses
- Ensure audit-ready documentation
- Support lender reporting requirements
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee accounting operations in QBO and AppFolio
- Support ERP implementation (NetSuite, Dynamics, etc.)
- Improve data flow between construction and rental systems
- Lead process optimization initiatives
Required Qualifications
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager within a $75M–$125M organization
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing accounting teams, including direct reports (Senior and/or Staff Accountants)
- Demonstrated experience overseeing teams with clear accountability and performance ownership
- Multi-entity accounting experience
- Strong construction and/or real estate accounting background
- Proven ownership of month-end close and balance sheet integrity
- Experience working within ERP systems (NetSuite, Intacct, Dynamics, etc.)
- Strong understanding of internal control principles
- Advanced Excel proficiency
