Worksite: Tribal Roads Compound

LLBO Status: Non-Exempt

Safety Sensitive: Yes

License/Certification Requirements: Must have a valid MN Class D Driver's License, current insurance, or be insurable. Ability to obtain Class B within 6-8 months of hire date and obtain Class A within one year after obtaining Class B.

Summary: Ensure that all reservation roads are maintained.

Education Requirements and Experience:

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) preferred.

Required to have sufficient experience in the operation of various types of heavy equipment (bulldozers, front-end loaders, etc.), enabling them to work independently and with minimum supervision.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

As a special requirement, the operator shall possess or shall be able to obtain a MN CDL Driver's License.

Required to have mechanical knowledge, enabling the incumbent to perform all routine servicing and to make minor repairs and adjustments to the assigned equipment.

Willing to work beyond regular work days, including weekends and holidays.

Highly skilled in handling controls on various machines and attachments to perform the work required.

Good oral and written communication skills and customer service skills.

Frequently, these different controls are handled at the same time, requiring good hand, foot, and eye coordination.

Pre-employment drug testing is mandatory for all Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe positions.

Willing to be on call 24/7.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Operate heavy equipment to push, pile or load materials, such as sand, earth, gravel or refuse.

Operate a front-end loader from 1 ½ ton to a 4 cubic yard capacity.

To maneuver materials to a specific spot and/or to transfer materials into a dump truck.

Operate a tandem dump truck equipped with a snow plow and wing for snow removal on either gravel or bituminous surface roadways and haul gravel for resurfacing or patching weak areas.

Operate a heavy-duty truck tractor and low-boy to haul heavy equipment to maintain projects throughout the Leech Lake Reservation.

Operate a wheel tractor for mowing roadside slopes and ditches.

Operator must make minor repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, lights, steering gear and hydraulic systems.

Repairs must be made promptly and correctly to avoid repeated breakdowns and extended downtime.

Performs routine servicing and makes adjustments to the attachments for proper level, slope or ditch, according to the work to be done and the type of equipment used.

Work is usually done on flat or rolling terrain roadways and construction sites with simple terrain problems.

Perform common labor duties that are normally required in road maintenance activities.

Must follow oral instructions concerning the location of the job and the work to be done.

Work is to be performed largely without direct supervision, and the operator is required to use his/her own discretion in scheduling work priorities, except for occasional telephone communication with supervisor.

Able to operate the equipment in a safe manner according to safety rules and regulations.

Use equipment properly so that it is not damaged.

Incumbent must remain constantly alert and operate the equipment carefully, especially when close to persons, buildings, etc., to prevent injury to others and/or damage to the equipment.

Incumbent is directly responsible for the maintenance of the assigned unit of equipment, which includes filling the fuel, greasing, changing engine oil and filters, tightening nuts, changing cutting edges, and minor adjustments to ensure proper and economical operation of the machine.

Incumbent completes a daily time record, which indicates hours worked and the nature of the work, fuel, gas and oil used in the machine.

Attend and/or conduct all mandatory meetings and trainings as required.

Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times.

Travel in and out of the state on a possibly regular basis.

Understanding and sensitivity to Native American culture.

Adhere to policies governing staff conduct.

All other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Physical effort by constantly reaching, turning and moving of hands, arms, feet and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments.

Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and jolting from operating over rough surface.

Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.

Ability to lift 75-100 lbs.

Incumbent is subject to noise, vibrations, dust, dirt and fumes form the motor exhaust.

Subject to internal working conditions (extreme temperatures and weather conditions).

Compensation: $19.00 - $20.50 DOQ
Additional Details : Monday - Friday, on Call
8:00am - 4:30pm
