What are the responsibilities and job description for the Loss Control Specialist position at Lake County?
As the safety expert for Lake County, you will be responsible for creating a safe workplace for nearly 3,000 employees, through promoting loss prevention and maintaining compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations through the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive safety program.
The roles and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate with County Administrator’s Office and the County’s Emergency Response Steering Committee to update and maintain the County’s Emergency Preparedness Plan.
- Provide day to day support and management of the County’s Safety Champion program and facilitate safety drills.
- Collaborate with Risk Manager to manage the ADA Transition Plan.
- Collaborate with the Risk Manager to update and maintain county safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct departmental safety assessments and recommend corrective actions to eliminate hazards.
- Manage safety trainings, occupational health programs and mandatory reporting.
- Serve as the point of contact for OSHA and/or any government health/safety investigations.
- Monitor and communicate regulatory updates to departments.
- Lead county-wide safety committee and participate in departmental safety committees.
- Provide day to day support and management of Lake County Risk & Safety programs including, but not limited to, the driving, AED, first aid supply, ergonomics, and safety data sheet programs.
- Ensure our mass communications system is up to date and assist in the distribution of communications using the system as appropriate.
- Monitor incident reporting portal and perform root cause analysis on incidents to determine corrective actions and preventative measures, as appropriate.
- Coordinate with appropriate staff to identify security gaps and determine appropriate improvements.
- Degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety and Health, or similar disciplines from accredited college or university.
- Safety Professional Certification, ASP or CSP preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in occupational health and safety OR an equivalent combination of certification, education, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties listed for this position.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Skills & Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety theories, job safety analysis techniques, and safety/incident inspection procedures.
- Analytical skills necessary to analyze technical data, loss experience reports, state and federal statutory provisions, unique loss causation reports, industry research and statistical data.
- Ability to analyze a variety of administrative problems and make sound policy and procedural recommendations in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to plan, organize, and execute work plan goals and objectives with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, collaborative partners, community organizations, regulatory agencies, and the public.
- Must be able to perform physical requirements as outlined below.
Physical Requirements:
- Conduct inspections and carry inspection equipment.
- Potentially lift, push pull or carry heavy objects.
- Potentially climb ladders and work on elevated platforms.
- Walk, stand, bend, squat, crawl and reach.
- Work in various conditions and wear the appropriate PPE.
- Vision and hearing within normal range.
- Ability to use hands for grasping and manipulation.
- Able to sit at a desk for a prolonged period of time.
- Ability to quickly assist in emergency situations.
