JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing clerical, administrative and professional work in municipal law enforcement. An employee occupying a position allocated to this class is responsible for the performance of a variety of field and office activities relating to the routine, non-violent aspects of law enforcement. This class of position differs from that of a Deputy Sheriff in that the incumbent does not possess arrest powers, is not authorized to carry a firearm or impact weapon, and does not enforce criminal laws, respond to emergency calls or calls where there is a perceived threat of safety exists. The duties contained in this job description may require shift work, weekends and holidays. Work assignments are given orally and in writing, and work is performed under close supervision for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Investigate or assists in the investigation of motor vehicle accidents.
  • Issues traffic citations based on these investigations.
  • Directs traffic and issues parking citations.
  • Responds to and investigates routine calls for service.
  • Investigates those incidents and writes clear and articulate police reports regarding those investigations.
  • Prepares lost and found property reports.
  • Assists in compiling and tabulating records, reports and special studies.
  • Assists residents and visitors in locating appropriate social service agencies.
  • Assists at minor crime scenes (assigned by a supervisor only).
  • Delivers emergency messages and other materials as required.
  • Attends court on/off duty.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.

One (1) year of work experience in conducting field work by assisting with traffic control and public safety or in emergency communications, property and evidence control; providing administrative support to sworn personnel in the performance of their duties; customer service and public contact work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Will be required to submit to a State and National Criminal Background Investigation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, both in person and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Department Regulations, City Ordinances, State Statutes and Federal Laws, or ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge in a reasonable time period.
  • Skilled in the use of office equipment, including copy machines and multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skilled in use of computers for data entry, word processing and accounting purposes.
  • Ability to complete Community Service Aide training (to include accident/parking enforcement training).
  • Ability to prepare presentation material and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to respond and investigate major vehicle accidents and other related activities and incidents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations, prepare statistical summaries and reports.
  • Ability to obtain and accurately record information and to prepare accurate work orders, reports and summaries.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and enter data accurately from a wide variety of source documents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is moderate: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force to move objects and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additional requirements include: balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Position requires the operation of a County vehicle.

Risk/Safety Conditions:

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (i.e. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.)
