Hemodialysis RNs are responsible for delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients undergoing hemodialysis, a treatment that filters waste and excess fluid from the blood when kidneys cannot function adequately. They work primarily in dialysis clinics, hospitals, or outpatient facilities, collaborating with nephrologists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.

- Patient Assessment: Evaluate patients’ health status before, during, and after dialysis, monitoring vital signs, fluid levels, and overall condition.
- Dialysis Procedure: Initiate, monitor, and discontinue hemodialysis treatments, ensuring proper operation of dialysis machines and adherence to protocols.
- Vascular Access Care: Manage and assess vascular access points (e.g., fistulas, grafts, or catheters) to prevent infections or complications.
- Medication Administration: Administer medications such as heparin, erythropoietin, or antibiotics as prescribed during treatment.
- Patient Education: Educate patients and families about kidney disease, dialysis procedures, dietary restrictions, and self-care to improve outcomes.
- Emergency Response: Recognize and respond to complications during dialysis, such as hypotension, cramping, or allergic reactions, following emergency protocols.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of treatments, patient responses, and any adverse events in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Collaboration: Work with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients.
- Infection Control: Follow strict infection control protocols to ensure a sterile environment and prevent bloodstream infections.
- Equipment Maintenance: Assist in cleaning, sterilizing, and troubleshooting dialysis machines and related equipment.
- Current state license as a Registered Nurse.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience, with a preference for those with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis experience.
- At least 6 months of general dialysis experience is highly preferred.
