About King Ocean Services

King Ocean Services is a family-owned ocean freight transportation company with over 40 years of proven expertise connecting the United States with ports throughout Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Operating from Port Everglades, Florida, we provide weekly cargo services including Full Container Load (FCL), Less-than-Container Load (LCL), refrigerated cargo, vehicles, heavy machinery, and project cargo. Our modern fleet, C-TPAT, BASC, and ISO certifications, and deeply customer-centric culture have established us as a leader in intra-Americas maritime shipping.

Following our 2024 strategic acquisition of Seacor Island Lines, King Ocean continues to grow its regional footprint and invest in the people and systems that support our mission.

Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is a core contributor to King Ocean’s Accounting & Finance team, reporting initially to the Corporate Controller. This role owns a broad range of general ledger and financial reporting responsibilities across multiple legal entities — including monthly close, multi-entity bank reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and review of foreign agent activity across the company’s Central American, South American, and Caribbean network.

The Senior Accountant will partner closely with the Controller on financial statement preparation, audit support, and the company’s transition to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365FO) later this year. As the Accounting & Finance team grows, the reporting structure for this role may evolve, offering meaningful opportunities for career progression.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Monthly Close

  • Prepare and post journal entries across multiple legal entities, including accruals, prepaid amortization, goodwill amortization, depreciation, intercompany transactions, and payroll entries.
  • Perform monthly GL account reconciliations and analyze balances for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification; investigate and resolve variances.
  • Own and execute assigned components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar, ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for prepaid expenses, accruals, fixed assets, depreciation, insurance, intercompany balances, and other recurring close items.

Financial Statements & Management Reporting

  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) for multiple King Ocean entities.
  • Draft financial statement commentary and variance analysis to support the Controller and CFO’s monthly reporting package.
  • Produce recurring management reports, including revenue reports, vessel expense reports, weekly funding reports, and other ad-hoc analyses as requested.
  • Support year-end audit and tax preparation by compiling schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for external auditors and advisors.

Bank Reconciliations, Cash & Foreign Operations

  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations across multiple operating and payroll accounts and legal entities (e.g., Fifth Third, Bank of America).
  • Review daily bank activity, distribute incoming/outgoing wire reports to the team, and prepare related journal entries.
  • Review foreign agent statements of account across the company’s Central American, South American, and Caribbean network; record corresponding journal entries and reconcile balances.
  • Apply incoming checks and wire transfers and update billing balances for assigned entities and revenue streams.

Tax, Controls & Cross-Functional Support

  • Prepare and electronically file recurring tax returns, including Florida Department of Revenue sales/use tax filings and other state and local tax obligations as assigned.
  • Help maintain and continuously improve accounting policies, standard operating procedures, and internal controls in alignment with U.S. GAAP.
  • Partner with AP, AR, Operations, and foreign agency teams to resolve accounting questions, and support the Controller in mentoring and training junior accounting and AP staff.
  • Contribute to the company’s upcoming Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365FO) implementation, including data validation, parallel testing, and post-go-live support.

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required.
  • CPA, CMA, or active progress toward CPA certification is a strong plus; Master’s in Accounting or related field is an additional plus.

Experience

  • A minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated ownership of monthly close, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) under U.S. GAAP.
  • Experience in a multi-entity environment is strongly preferred; multi-currency or international agent accounting experience is a meaningful advantage.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365FO) is strongly preferred; exposure to an ERP migration or implementation is a meaningful plus, as King Ocean will be transitioning to D365FO later this year. Working knowledge of additional ERP and accounting platforms (e.g., Sage 50, QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP) is valued.
  • Experience in transportation, shipping, logistics, freight forwarding, or maritime industry is a meaningful advantage.
  • Experience supporting external audits and preparing audit workpapers and schedules.
  • Bilingual English / Spanish strongly preferred to support communication with foreign agents and team members across Latin America.
