What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Director position at Kimball Construction Co?
Safety Director - Construction | Baltimore Based | Washington DC/Baltimore Metro Projects
Lead Safety for a Top Regional Construction Company | Direct COO Report | Standalone Leadership Role
Kimball Construction is seeking a credentialed Safety Director to own our award-winning safety program. You'll report directly to the COO as the single point of safety authority across multiple active projects in the DC/Baltimore metro area. What makes this different: We've already built a sophisticated, data-driven safety program unusual for our size. You're not starting from scratch—you're taking a very good program and making it great.
Your Impact - What Success Looks Like
This role is dynamic and field-oriented. You'll spend 3-4 days per week conducting weekly safety evaluations at active project sites using digital platforms, building trust with Superintendents, PMs, and craft professionals as a supportive partner, leading incident investigations and root cause analysis, and traveling to projects across Washington DC, Baltimore metro, Frederick, and Delaware from our Baltimore office. Your office-based work (1-2 days per week at our Baltimore office) involves managing safety budget and policy development, authoring weekly company-wide "Safety Flash" communications, creating Site-Specific Safety Plans and reviewing critical safety documents, and driving compliance strategy for new regulations.
What You Need to Win
Required credentials include a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field (extensive experience considered in lieu of degree), OSHA 500 & 510 Certification (Authorized Outreach Trainer), ASP (Associate Safety Professional) certification minimum, currently pursuing CSP and/or CHST certification, First Aid/CPR certified, and 5 years progressive construction safety experience (3 considered for exceptional candidates). Your success profile should demonstrate you're a relationship builder with natural ability to earn trust across all levels, tech-forward and proficient with MS Office and digital safety management platforms, self-directed and able to thrive in standalone roles with high visibility, field-oriented and energized by being on-site vs. behind a desk, and a strategic thinker who can balance immediate safety needs with long-term program evolution.
What You'll Love About This Role
You'll have direct COO reporting relationship where your voice matters at the executive level, budget authority giving you real power to implement your vision, work in a technology-forward environment with leading-edge safety management systems, spend 75% of your time on active job sites, join a culture of excellence that values safety as competitive advantage, receive support for professional growth including advanced certifications and career development, and work for a regionally stable established company with consistent project pipeline.
Company Culture Fit
We're looking for a safety professional, not a safety cop. You believe in integrity and collaborative excellence, building programs through relationships and trust, data-driven decision making, continuous improvement mindset, and proactive risk management vs. reactive compliance.
