Position Title
Histology Technician (Histotechnologist)
Job Summary
The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. Duties include processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and mounting tissue samples while maintaining quality control and laboratory compliance standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive, accession, and prepare tissue specimens for processing
- Perform tissue fixation, embedding, microtomy, and staining procedures
- Prepare routine H&E stains and special stains as ordered
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper function
- Label and organize slides accurately for pathologist review
- Follow infection control, OSHA, CLIA, and CAP guidelines
- Maintain quality assurance and quality control documentation
- Assist with inventory and supply management
- Ensure timely turnaround of pathology specimens
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology preferred
- Completion of accredited Histology Technician program preferred
- ASCP certification (HT or HTL) preferred
- Previous laboratory experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures and safety standards
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to operate laboratory instruments and equipment
Physical Requirements
- Standing for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Manual dexterity for handling small instruments and specimens
Work Environment
- Clinical laboratory and pathology environment
- Exposure to chemicals, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment
Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
