Machine Builder / Service Technician – Industrial Machinery | Rockford, Illinois
Direct Hire | Onsite
Targeted pay rate: $27-40/hr depending upon qualification
Kelly Engineering is seeking a skilled Machine Builder/ Service Technician to join our client’s team. This role is unique in that you’ll spend the majority of your time onsite at the main facility building and preparing custom machines before they ship. Once complete, you’ll travel to client sites to handle installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and occasional repair work to ensure the machines are fully operational.

Kelly Engineering is seeking a skilled Machine Builder/ Service Technician to join our client’s team. This role is unique in that you’ll spend the majority of your time onsite at the main facility building and preparing custom machines before they ship. Once complete, you’ll travel to client sites to handle installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and occasional repair work to ensure the machines are fully operational.
What You’ll Do
- Install, commission, and service cutting-edge CNC machine tools, control systems, and associated equipment.
- Interpret complex electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication schematics to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
- Perform precise geometrical leveling, alignment, and calibration using laser measurement tools to ensure optimal machine accuracy.
- Troubleshoot and repair major mechanical components such as spindles, gearboxes, drive systems, and ball screws.
- Configure and troubleshoot advanced axis control systems, tool changers, and automation feature.
- Conduct acceptance tests, workforce training, and provide ongoing technical support to customer teams.
- Collaborate with engineering and service leadership by sharing feedback for product improvement and system reliability.
- Maintain detailed documentation of service activities, repairs, and recommendations.
- 5 years of hands-on experience servicing industrial machine tools or similar capital equipment.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control system troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software, laptops, and field service tools.
- Excellent problem-solving and customer communication skills.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and operate in industrial environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel, including internationally on occasion, with a valid passport.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical degree, military technical training, or apprenticeship in engineering, electronics, or machinery preferred.
- Ability to work mostly first-shift hours with overtime
- Capable of working in diverse industrial settings, often at heights or in confined spaces.
- Travel: Work primarily onsite at the main facility, with travel to client sites once or twice per year for multi-week installation and commissioning activities
