What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Director, Workplace Experience position at Keller Executive Search?
We are partnering with Earthjustice, the nation's premier nonprofit public interest environmental law organization, to find their next Senior Director of Workplace Experience.
Founded in 1971, Earthjustice wields the power of law to protect people's health, preserve magnificent places and wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change. Because the earth needs a good lawyer.
With approximately 700 staff across 17 offices, Earthjustice has grown fivefold in the last decade — and their operations infrastructure needs to match that ambition. The Senior Director of Workplace Experience will be the most senior real estate and facilities leader in the organization, reporting directly to the CFO and taking ownership of a recently refreshed national portfolio. There are no burning transactions on the horizon. What they need now is a builder: someone to design the programmatic infrastructure — utilization tracking, safety protocols, facilities standards — that positions Earthjustice for its next phase of growth.
Key ResponsibilitiesReal Estate & Portfolio Management (30%)
- Manage the Earthjustice real estate footprint; design workplace strategy; and execute relevant initiatives informed by Earthjustice's values, data analytics, and industry trends.
- Manage all aspects of real estate transactions, lease negotiations, office relocations and consolidations, and space allocations, including the hiring and performance management of third-party brokers and advisors and other resources as necessary.
- Ensure adequate monitoring of and accountability to all relevant lease terms, insurance requirements, and regulations, ensuring landlords and property managers are upholding their responsibilities to Earthjustice.
- Translate portfolio data and analytics into clear, actionable recommendations for executive leadership.
Workplace Operations Programming (30%)
- Design and implement systems of ongoing management for all critical real estate and workplace programs — including lease administration, space allocations, maintenance and CapEx planning, and security and safety.
- Identify and set standards for facilities operations practices, materials, and more, using frameworks to right-size standards for differing regions, footprints, and use cases across the national portfolio.
- Serve as national lead for office-based security, emergency preparedness, and business continuity protocols.
- Build and deploy programmatic initiatives (utilization tracking, amenity programs, facilities hygiene standards) across the full portfolio.
Workplace Operations Administration (20%)
- Manage third-party vendor relationships and budgets — both project-based and ongoing — ensuring Earthjustice resources are well stewarded.
- Supported by the Real Estate and Workplace Operations teams, ensure training on, and accountability to, national standards across the office manager cohort.
- Ensure systems exist, data is captured, and insightful analytics are shared with leadership and others to enable decision-making and to monitor the health of the real estate and facilities programs.
Team Management & Leadership (20%)
- Directly supervise and develop the Sr. Manager of Workplace Operations and the Manager, Real Estate Operations.
- Lead through influence with dotted-line operational staff embedded in smaller offices who report locally to managing attorneys.
- Communicate change thoughtfully — guiding staff through office transitions with both patience and conviction.
Required Qualifications
- 10 years of progressive experience in real estate, facilities management, and organizational change management; experience with a multi-site organizational structure highly preferred.
- Proven ability to lead significant real estate transactions or office transformations, including all stakeholder, change management, and communication dimensions.
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to both design and implement plans — from strategy through to execution.
- Experience building or formalizing real estate and facilities programs in an environment where systems were immature, including building organizational alignment around new systems and tools.
- Strong people leadership, including direct management and leading through influence where formal authority does not exist.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to translate complex data into relevant and understandable information, and to train or instruct others in business processes and tools.
- High emotional intelligence; a positive, solutions-oriented approach; and a proven track record of guiding staff through workplace change with empathy and firmness.
- Proven record of meeting organizational goals and deadlines; solid vendor management and budget oversight experience.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Background in a professional services, legal, or nonprofit environment where real estate decisions are driven by program leaders rather than a dedicated real estate function.
- Experience with a distributed, mixed-tenure portfolio (leased, co-working, owned) at a comparable scale — 15-20 locations, under 250,000 sq ft.
- Facilities management or sustainable real estate certifications (CFM, LEED, RPA, or similar).
