Background and General Information
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Collaborative Diversion initiative is based on the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) model. Collaborative Diversion is a system of response that replaces the traditional pipeline of punishment with long-term, patient, non-coercive, and non-judgmental case management for low-level, nonviolent offenders.
Collaborative Diversion case management is street-based, client-driven, long-term, adaptive, non-clinical, and based on harm reduction. It focuses on building trusting relationships with participants through regular meetings. Candidates not yet familiar with motivational interviewing, stages of change theory, or harm reduction practices will receive the necessary training.
Responsibilities
- Respond to requests for warm handoffs during regular work hours
- Make contact with new referrals within one business day and assess for immediate needs
- Initiate and schedule regular contact times with participants in order to assist in meeting goals
- Maintain accurate digital records of all participant forms and documents in Apricot
- Meet with Operations Workgroup as scheduled to provide participant updates and collaborate on participant care
- Advocate for participants within the criminal legal system as necessary and appropriate
- Identify systemic barriers and potential solutions to address the needs of participants
- Attend supervision meetings with Case Manager Supervisor
- Foster positive relationships with law enforcement partners, local service providers, and other key stakeholders in the county and criminal justice system
- Adhere to all confidentiality and privacy policies and refrain from divulging any identifying information about collaborative diversion participants
- Must have own vehicle and be willing and able to drive it for work.
Desired Qualities and Experience
- Understanding of harm reduction
- Experience working with highly complex populations
- Deep commitment to systems transformation, and comfort in highly variable settings are desired.
- People with lived experience with mental illness, arrest and incarceration, trauma, and systemic inequities (including marginalization and trauma related to racism, sexual assault, or homo/transphobia) are prioritized.
- Experience working in social services or harm reduction is a plus.
- Cultural competency is a plus - bilingualism (Spanish – testing required).
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences (social work, psychology or sociology).
- Valid driver's license.
