The Fleet Mechanic maintains the functionality and safety of our ambulance fleet. The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for conducting routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on our ambulance vehicles to ensure they are in optimal condition for emergency response. Primary duties will include diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and other technical issues, performing preventive maintenance tasks, and troubleshooting and repairing vehicle components and systems. Additionally, the Fleet Mechanic will assist the Fleet Supervisor in managing inventory, ordering parts and supplies, and maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities.

Duties and responsibilities
&
Primary duties of the Fleet Mechanic include, but are not limited to, the following, and are in addition to any duties requested by KCEAA.
&
  • Use hand tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, or precision instruments, as well as power tools, such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, or jacks and hoists.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, or pressure gauges.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps and compressors.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Adjust or repair computer-controlled exhaust emissions devices.
  • Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
  • Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
  • Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
  • Install or repair accessories.
  • Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
  • Dismount, mount, and repair or replace tires.
  • Align front ends and suspension systems.
  • Maintain or repair vehicles with alternative fuel systems, including biodiesel, hybrid, or compressed natural gas vehicles.
  • Measure vehicle emissions to determine whether they are within acceptable limits.
  • Follow green operational practices involving conservation of water or energy or reduction of solid waste.
  • Operate valve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications
&
The minimum qualifications for Fleet Mechanic include:
&
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • WV driver’s license with safe driving record
  • 4 years minimum automotive experience, focused on diagnosis and repair
  • WV State Inspection License, or ability to obtain
  • Automotive Certified

Working conditions
&
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places.& The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.& The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The position is a non-mission critical position.& However, the employee may be required to work on holidays, on short notice, and until properly relieved during emergency situations.
&
Physical requirements
&
The Fleet Mechanic is continuously and physically challenged by lifting 100 pounds into and out of vehicles.& They are required to sit, stand, crouch, climb, and to maintain a high degree of physical stamina for prolonged periods of time.& The nature of work requires exposure to all types of inclement weather and adverse environmental conditions.& Workers may be exposed to infectious/fatal diseases and biohazardous waste products.& The physical effort required is directly related to the work environment and the worker's ability to physically operate in those conditions for extended periods of time.
