First Presbyterian Church, Kalamazoo, Michigan

Lovell Street Receptionist / Greeter

Part-Time | $15.00 per Hour | Sunday Flexible Event Hours

Purpose

To provide a welcoming, attentive, and security-conscious staff presence at First Presbyterian Church’s primary parking lot / Lovell Street entrance.

The Lovell Street Receptionist / Greeter helps maintain the safety and security of the church building by monitoring entrances, security cameras, and activity throughout the building; controlling access through secured doors; maintaining awareness of who is in the building and why they are present; and responding appropriately when concerns arise.

These responsibilities are carried out in the spirit of Sacred Hospitality. Our goal is to provide appropriate building security without losing the warmth, welcome, and care that should characterize a church community. The person in this position should be able to warmly welcome a visitor while also being comfortable asking who they are here to see, where they are going, or why they need access to the building.

Accountability

This position is accountable to the Head of Staff and Personnel Committee through the Operations Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary receptionist and greeter at the parking lot / Lovell Street entrance, providing a visible and attentive staff presence.
  • Monitor building security and access during assigned hours, maintaining awareness of who is entering, leaving, and using the church building.
  • Monitor security camera feeds and remain attentive to activity at entrances, hallways, exterior areas, and other monitored portions of the church property.
  • Control access through secured entrances, including responding to the door buzzer/intercom, identifying visitors as appropriate, and determining when access should be granted.
  • Greet visitors upon arrival and, when appropriate, determine whom they are visiting, what meeting or activity they are attending, and where they need to go.
  • Assist with and reinforce the church’s visitor sign-in and sign-out procedures so that staff can maintain an appropriate awareness of who is in the building.
  • Maintain awareness of scheduled activities and building use so that individuals entering the church can be appropriately welcomed and directed.
  • Be attentive to individuals entering or moving through areas of the building where they are not expected to be and politely inquire or redirect them when appropriate.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to unusual, concerning, or unauthorized activity and promptly communicate concerns to the Operations Coordinator, custodial staff, pastors, other appropriate church staff, or emergency services when necessary.
  • Greet and assist church members, visitors, neighbors, community partners, vendors, and others using the church building.
  • Assist visitors in finding meeting rooms, worship spaces, offices, restrooms, elevators, and other areas of the church.
  • Provide hospitality and basic assistance to groups using the church for worship, meetings, concerts, memorial services, rehearsals, classes, community programs, and other scheduled activities.
  • Help ensure that exterior doors and entrances are appropriately secured according to church procedures and the activities taking place in the building.
  • Communicate building concerns, maintenance issues, safety concerns, or other problems promptly to the appropriate staff member.
  • Assist with basic office duties as requested when those duties do not interfere with the primary responsibilities of reception, building access, and security monitoring.
  • Help provide additional reception and greeter coverage during vacations, illnesses, planned absences, special events, and other staffing needs.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and discretion regarding church members, visitors, staff, security procedures, and activities taking place within the church.
  • Be a cooperative and supportive member of the church staff team through effective communication, reliability, sound judgment, and a willingness to adapt to the changing needs of the church.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Relationships

Work in close cooperation with the Operations Coordinator, Head of Staff, pastors, office and custodial staff, other Lovell Street Receptionists / Greeters, church members, volunteers, and community groups using the building.

Qualifications and Expectations

The successful candidate must understand that building safety and security are central responsibilities of this position. This requires attentiveness, good judgment, situational awareness, dependability, and the ability to appropriately question or redirect someone when necessary.

At the same time, First Presbyterian Church is committed to providing a welcoming environment. Security procedures should be carried out with kindness, dignity, respect, and good judgment.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be comfortable monitoring security cameras and responding to a secured-door buzzer/intercom system.
  • Be comfortable asking visitors their name, whom they are visiting, and the purpose of their visit when appropriate.
  • Be attentive to who is entering and leaving the building and maintain awareness of scheduled activities.
  • Be able to politely enforce building access and visitor procedures.
  • Remain attentive and engaged throughout a shift, including during periods when the building is relatively quiet.
  • Exercise good judgment about when a situation can be handled personally and when assistance from another staff member or emergency services is appropriate.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Demonstrate reliability, discretion, flexibility, and appropriate confidentiality.
  • Understand that hospitality and security are not competing responsibilities. Caring for the people who enter our building includes providing a safe and appropriately monitored environment.
