GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to provide supervisory leadership and operational oversight to Animal Services & Enforcement (AS&E) field staff and the dispatcher. This position ensures compliance with state and local laws pertaining to animal control, supports staff development and performance, and coordinates enforcement, training, and community outreach efforts. The role requires sound judgment, crisis management, and collaboration with other departments, agencies, and the public to ensure animal welfare and public safety
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs and supports six (6) AS&E Officers and one (1) Dispatcher. Oversees scheduling, performance management, training, and evaluation. Provides guidance and mentoring to ensure effective field operations, professionalism, and adherence to policies and safety standards.
- Oversees enforcement of animal-related laws and ordinances. Ensures compliance with state and local regulations, supervises investigations, and assists in legal processes, including warrants and court cases. Coordinates with law enforcement and public agencies.
- Develops and implements training programs and policies aligned with best practices. Reviews and revises department procedures. Provides input on strategic goals, resource allocation, and operational improvements.
- Prepares reports, data summaries, and presentations. Represents the department at community events, meetings, and educational outreach initiatives, sometimes occurring on weekends or holidays.
- Performs related work as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- At least two years of relevant college-level course work or an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in animal care, law enforcement, or a related field
- 3 to 5 years of related work experience, such as animal handling, law enforcement, or related area. Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan for Animal Control and Euthanasia. Valid Michigan driver’s license
