Senior Accountant (Governmental Accounting)
Location: In Office- Tampa, FL
Reports To: Director of CDD Accounting

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant with a strong background in governmental accounting to join our finance team. This individual will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all financial records and reports. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of GAAP, GASB standards, and fund accounting principles commonly used by municipalities, special districts, and public agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements in compliance with governmental accounting standards (GASB).
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and audits (internal and external).
- Monitor and reconcile fund balances, grants, restricted accounts, and interfund transactions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable state statutes, local ordinances, and reporting requirements.
- Perform month-end and year-end close processes, including adjustments, accruals, and financial reporting.
- Support the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
- Provide financial analysis to management, highlighting trends, variances, and recommendations for improvement.
- Collaborate with other departments to maintain accurate accounting for capital projects, debt service, and fixed assets.
- Assist with implementing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial data.
- Stay current on changes to GASB standards, audit procedures, and public-sector financial best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of professional accounting experience, with 3 years in governmental or fund accounting.
- Comprehensive understanding of GAAP and GASB.
- Experience preparing or assisting with audited financial statements and budget reports for governmental entities.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., MUNIS, Tyler Technologies, QuickBooks Government Edition, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills.
- CPA or CGFO certification preferred (or ability to obtain).
