Overview

We are seeking a skilled Power BI Developer to support a Business Intelligence (BI) program. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise across data modeling, reporting, analytics, stakeholder collaboration, and Power BI platform administration. This role requires the ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions and deliver high-quality dashboards, reports, and semantic models that drive informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Requirements Gathering

• Partner with business stakeholders and data analysts to understand reporting, visualization, and data model requirements.
• Translate business objectives into effective reporting and analytics solutions.
• Identify relevant data sources and attributes for inclusion in data models.
• Demonstrate intermediate-level Excel proficiency, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis techniques.
• Reverse engineer existing business-user-developed processes, formulas, pivot tables, and analyses to interpret requirements.
• Recommend process efficiencies, logic improvements, and optimization opportunities.

Data Modeling

• Design, document, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models aligned with business requirements.
• Develop reusable semantic models within Power BI.
• Implement row-level and column-level security within Power BI semantic models.
• Create and maintain efficient relationships between tables.
• Optimize data structures for performance and scalability.
• Utilize Tabular Editor Best Practice Analyzer to ensure adherence to data modeling and DAX best practices.

Data Source Connectivity Setup

• Connect Power BI solutions to a variety of data sources, including:
• APIs
• BigQuery
• ArcGIS maps and feature layers
• SQL databases
• Excel files
• Streaming datasets
• Ensure reliable data extraction, transformation, and integration processes.
• Collaborate with integration teams to understand and implement appropriate integration patterns.

DAX Development

• Develop and maintain DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) formulas.
• Create calculated columns, measures, and custom calculations to support reporting and analytical requirements.
• Apply DAX best practices to improve report performance and maintainability.

Report Creation

• Design and develop interactive, user-friendly dashboards and reports.
• Incorporate advanced Power BI functionality, including:
• Slicers
• Drill-through capabilities
• Streaming visuals
• ArcGIS visualizations
• Optimize report performance using DAX Studio and Power BI performance analysis tools.
• Recommend improvements to underlying data models when necessary.

Power BI Service & Deployment

• Publish and manage reports within the Power BI Service.
• Configure and manage user access controls and security.
• Automate data refresh schedules.
• Monitor and optimize report performance, particularly for large datasets.
• Support deployment and governance best practices.

AI Familiarity

• Leverage AI tools and technologies to enhance reporting, analytics, and process efficiency.
• Utilize AI-driven approaches to improve data analysis workflows.
• Experience with Google AI tools is considered an advantage.

Source Control & Development Practices

• Follow established organizational standards for source control and version management of Power BI assets.
• Utilize Azure DevOps as part of the development lifecycle and deployment process.
• Maintain documentation and adhere to development best practices.

Collaboration & Communication

• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver solutions aligned with business objectives.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
• Present complex data insights and reporting outcomes in a concise and understandable manner.
• Facilitate meetings, working sessions, and screen-sharing discussions.
• Participate in backlog reviews, status discussions, and evolving requirements-gathering activities.

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong experience with Power BI development, data modeling, and dashboard design.
• Expertise in DAX development and performance optimization.
• Experience working with diverse data sources and integration patterns.
• Knowledge of Power BI Service administration, security, and deployment.
• Proficiency in Excel for advanced data analysis.
• Familiarity with Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, Azure DevOps, and Power BI performance tools.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience working in collaborative, cross-functional environments.
