Statement of Purpose:
The Graduate Surgical Technologist (LPN) assists in the provision of surgical care under the supervision of a registered nurse. This position is designed for recent graduates of an accredited LPN program who are awaiting licensure. The Graduate Surgical Technologist functions as a member of the sterile surgical team, maintaining the sterile field and supporting the surgical team throughout procedures. Upon obtaining licensure, the graduate will assume responsibilities as an LPN Surgical Technologist.
Employment Conditions:
- Graduate of an accredited LPN program and eligible for New York State licensure.
- Must obtain NYS LPN licensure within 90 days of hire.
- Strong preference for candidates who will obtain Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification within one year of hire.
- Failure to obtain LPN licensure within 90 days may result in termination of employment.
- Limited extensions may be granted based on organizational need and individual circumstances.
Essential Functions (Post-Licensure):
- Prepare the operating room with required instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Maintain sterile technique, assist with gowning and gloving, and support the surgical team during procedures.
- Anticipate needs of the team, perform instrument/sponge counts, and assist with specimen handling and post-op dressing.
- Assist in positioning, transporting, and transferring patients pre- and post-procedure.
- Clean and decontaminate instruments and equipment; assist in sterilization preparation.
- Follow infection control protocols and safety standards; manage hazardous materials appropriately.
- Maintain required documentation and supply inventory; participate in continuing education and quality initiatives.
- Demonstrate competency in age-specific surgical care; assist in orientation of new staff as needed.
- Participate in scheduled shifts and on-call duties, responding within 20–30 minutes as required.
Education and Certification Requirements:
- Required at Hire:
- Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program
- CPR/BLS certification (or within 30 days of hire)
- Awaiting New York State LPN licensure
- Required Within 90 Days:
- New York State LPN license and current registration
- Preferred Within One Year:
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA or equivalent
