What are the responsibilities and job description for the Stage Manager position at Joffrey Ballet?
The Grainger Academy of the Joffrey Ballet is seeking a Stage Manager for our upcoming performance run of Winning Works in March 2026.
Description:
Winning Works is a choreographic competition for emerging choreographers setting original pieces of dance on Grainger Academy Professional Training Program students. We will host four choreographers from across the world as well as a fifth that is local to Chicago. Styles range from classical to contemporary. This project culminates in nine performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
Location:
All tech rehearsals and performances will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s Edlis Neeson Theater, located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611.
Important Dates:
Tech Weeks: March 9 – March 13
Performances (9 total): March 13 – March 15 & March 19 – March 22
Fee: $2,500-$3,000 based on prior experience
Preferred Experience:
• Experience calling lighting and sound cues for dance performance
• Experience working with students ages 15-21
Responsibilities:
• Attend in-studio run through at the end of each choreographer’s residency at Joffrey Tower (to be scheduled) – 10 East Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois 60601
• Prepare and call all cues (lighting, sound, projection, scenic, etc.) cues for tech rehearsals and performances
• Help establish and maintain backstage safety
• Manage a small run crew of IATSE and MCA crew for gel changes and movement of any props
• Coordinate start of performances with front-of-house management
• Send out all evening performance reports
• Work with Production Coordinator to prepare sign-in sheets
