Food Service Technician

As a Food Service Technician, you’ll play an important role in supporting the preparation, packaging, and serving of meals for older adults participating in JASA programs. Your work helps ensure participants receive nutritious meals in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment while maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations.


Shift Schedule:

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

About the Role

The Food Service Technician supports daily meal service operations by assisting with food preparation, meal packaging, serving, inventory management, and maintaining a clean and organized program site. This role ensures participants receive nutritious meals while following food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.


What You'll Be Doing

Meal Preparation & Service

  • Clean and prepare fresh food items for cooking and meal service.
  • Package prepared meals and assist with daily meal preparation activities.
  • Serve Congregate and/or Grab-and-Go meals to program participants.
  • Follow food handling, sanitation, and safety requirements.
  • Ensure meal service areas are organized and ready for participant use.

Food Storage & Inventory

  • Receive, unpack, and properly store food deliveries and supplies.
  • Refrigerate food items promptly upon delivery.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of food storage areas.
  • Assist with monitoring food inventory and supplies.
  • Support proper food rotation and storage procedures.

Cleaning & Site Support

  • Clean kitchen, dining room, and bathroom areas as needed, particularly in the absence of maintenance staff.
  • Operate kitchen utensils and equipment, including mechanical kitchen equipment such as meat slicers.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Assist volunteers and support related program activities when needed.

Program & Emergency Operations Support

  • Participate in Cooling Center Hours, Make-Up Days, and other emergency operations as required by City funders.
  • Assist with special program activities and operational needs.
  • Perform additional duties and assignments as requested.

What You'll Need

Education

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.

Experience

  • Previous food service, kitchen, cafeteria, senior services, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience following food safety and sanitation procedures is a plus.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to learn program-specific software.
  • Ability to safely operate kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and safety.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb stairs, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends during emergency operations or special program needs.

Certifications

  • New hires must obtain a Food Handler’s License within the first six months of employment if not already certified.
