JASA is hosting an In-Person Interview Event for our Full-Time Food Service Technician position at our Williamsburg Older Adult Center, and we'd love to meet you!

As a Food Service Technician, you’ll play an essential role in supporting JASA’s mission by helping prepare, package, and serve nutritious meals for older adults participating in our programs. Your work helps ensure participants receive quality meals in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment while supporting the daily operations of the center.

The Food Service Technician is responsible for assisting with meal preparation and service, maintaining food storage and inventory areas, following food safety and sanitation requirements, operating kitchen equipment, and supporting the overall cleanliness and organization of the Williamsburg Older Adult Center.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Food Service Technician, you’ll support the daily meal service operations at the Williamsburg Older Adult Center by assisting with food preparation, meal distribution, inventory management, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Meal Preparation & Service

  • Clean and prepare fresh food items for cooking and service.
  • Assist with meal preparation activities.
  • Package prepared meals for participant service.
  • Serve Congregate and/or Grab-and-Go meals to program participants.
  • Follow food handling, sanitation, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain proper food preparation procedures to ensure participant safety.

Food Storage & Inventory

  • Receive, unpack, and properly store food deliveries and supplies.
  • Refrigerate food items promptly upon delivery.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary food storage areas.
  • Assist with monitoring and managing food inventory.
  • Ensure food and supplies are stored properly according to program procedures.

Kitchen & Site Support

  • Clean kitchen, dining room, and bathroom areas as needed, particularly in the absence of maintenance staff.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Operate kitchen utensils and equipment, including mechanical kitchen equipment such as meat slicers.
  • Assist with organizing supplies and maintaining program areas.
  • Support volunteers and assist with related activities when needed.

Program & Emergency Operations Support

  • Participate in Cooling Center Hours, Make-Up Days, and other emergency operations as required by City funders.
  • Assist with special program activities and operational needs.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What You’ll Need

Education

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.

Experience

  • Previous food service, kitchen, meal preparation, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a community, senior services, healthcare, or institutional food service setting preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to learn program-specific software.
  • Ability to safely operate kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and older adults.
  • Dependable, reliable, and team-oriented.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with food preparation, cleaning, and meal service.
  • Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment.

Availability Requirements

  • Must be available to work extended hours or weekends during emergency operations, special events, or program needs as required.

Licenses & Certifications

  • New hires must obtain a Food Handler’s License within the first six months of employment if not already certified.
