We need a skilled industrial mechanic responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting the specialized equipment used in electroplating and other metal-finishing processes. In addition to general mechanical skills, this role requires specific knowledge of plating lines, chemical safety, and the systems that handle hazardous materials.
Job summary
The plating maintenance mechanic ensures all machinery, equipment, and building systems within a metal-finishing or electroplating facility are running safely and efficiently. This includes performing preventive maintenance, responding to emergency repair requests, and installing new equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production quality.
Essential duties and responsibilities
• Preventive and corrective maintenance: Conduct routine inspections and execute a preventive maintenance schedule for all plating lines, hoists, pumps, ventilation systems, rectifiers, and other equipment. Perform emergency repairs on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic equipment.
• Troubleshooting and diagnostics: Diagnose equipment failures by observing mechanical devices in operation, listening for problems, and using precision measuring and testing instruments. This includes using tools like voltmeters and ohmmeters to test electrical systems.
• Plating-specific equipment: Repair and maintain specialized equipment such as plating tanks, racking systems, containment berms, and related controls. This may also involve repairing or replacing parts and components, such as valves, hoses, and pipes.
• Industrial machinery: Install, repair, and adjust general industrial machinery, including motors, pneumatic tools, and conveyor systems, to ensure optimal performance.
• Plumbing maintenance: Perform minor and major plumbing repairs on plating and wastewater treatment systems, including fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and replacing pipes. Expertise with PVC, CPVC, and black steel pipe is often required.
• Chemical and wastewater management: Perform maintenance on wastewater treatment plant equipment and understand the proper handling and storage of chemicals and hazardous waste streams.
• Safety and compliance: Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA requirements, company safety protocols, and proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. This includes maintaining facility safety equipment like eyewash stations.
• Fabrication and parts management: Fabricate repair parts using machine shop instruments, as needed. Track inventory of necessary maintenance parts and supplies, and initiate material orders.
Qualifications and skills
• Experience: Previous experience as an industrial maintenance mechanic in a metal finishing, plating, or similar manufacturing environment is typically required.
• Technical knowledge: Strong mechanical aptitude with solid experience in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) is preferred.
• Chemical awareness: Knowledge of chemical safety, handling of hazardous materials, and environmental regulations is critical due to exposure to chemicals like chromic acid and caustic materials.
• Tool proficiency: Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of hand and power tools, machine shop instruments, and welding equipment.
• Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum requirement. An associate's degree or vocational training in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, or a related field is a plus. OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training may be required.
• Physical stamina: The ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), stand for long periods, and perform manual labor in a manufacturing environment.
