What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Surgical RN position at Jefferson County Health Center?
This position is eligible for a $20,000 sign-on bonus and the waiting period for our Student Loan Assistance Program will be waived. Employees are eligible for up to $15,000 in student loan assistance ($5,000/year for up to 3 years).
This is a weekend option position; the schedule will be as follows: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 6:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m. The only holiday rotation for this position will be for holidays that fall on the weekend.
POSITION OVERVIEW: To plan and provide for total patient care through use of nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient needs. To direct and guide patient teaching, activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing. Current Iowa license (RN).
- BCLS, ACLS as indicated by area of responsibility.
- Experience preferred, but not required.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to Department Manager, Department Assistant Manager, and/or House Supervisor

POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Consistently utilizes methods and knowledge to accurately assess all patient systems.
- Identifies appropriate nursing diagnosis to develop a plan of care that is individualized, timely, and patient centered.
- Implements nursing actions safely and consistently with the plan of care.
- Incorporates patient and family teaching into the assessment and care of each patient. Evaluates outcomes of patient care and teaching.
- Assessment, planning, intervention, including teaching and evaluation of patient care are reflected by completed and accurate documentation.
- Acts as liaison between physicians, care team, the patient, and the family. Serves as patient advocate, as necessary.
- Demonstrates the ability to use critical thinking skills in prioritization, delegation, decision making and practicing safety.
- Attends all required meetings and in-services.
- Other duties as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Good, inside working environment. Occasional hazards, with possible exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, and gases.
PHYSICAL DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK:
- Work is of heavy demand, requiring lifting weights over 25 pounds.
- Requires movement, assisting and/or helping lift patients or awkward weights (100-250 pound patients). May require strenuous physical activity when dealing with agitated patients.
- Repeated bending, squatting, stooping, and/or sitting.
- Prolonged walking and standing.
- Occasional pushing – pulling movement.
- Hearing acuity to distinguish difference in heartbeat, blood pressure, and other physical signs and symptoms and to receive physician, staff and patient communications.
- Visual acuity to detect changes in patient condition, to read gauges and meters, to read medical records and physician orders, and to document on patient records and other required documentation.
- Language skills essential in instructing and supervising personnel and in communications with physicians, staff, and patients.
- Writing and typing skills for accurate documentation.
