POSITION OVERVIEW: (non-exempt)

Provides leadership to all the patient care departments, ensuring appropriate quality of care and compliance with regulations, in absence of manager, director, and/or administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with current Iowa RN license
  • ACLS, BCLS, and PALS, TNCC within 1 year of employment
  • Demonstrated competence in management and/or leadership skills for a minimum of three years
  • Willingness to complete de-escalation training when available

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to shared Medical Surgical Department Manager, Emergency and Education Director and Assistant Nursing Manager (when applicable)

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

House Supervisor

  • Assumes the leadership position for Incident Command until other qualified personnel arrive on-site.
    • Fire alarms
    • Equipment failure
    • Utility issues
    • Disaster notification
    • Security issues
    • Weather related issues
    • Fast Command Communication
  • Facilitates house-wide drills as directed.
  • Deploys staff, supplies, and/or equipment as needed.
  • Use fiscal management of supplies and staff.
  • Rounds on all departments and supervises patient care. Assist with patient care as needed.
  • Coordinates with department heads to identify patient problems and assists in formatting effective resolution.
  • Keeps self and staff informed of medical/legal aspects of nursing care given in assigned areas.
  • Collaboratively leads Nursing and Hospital departments, while providing mentorship, education, and training as directed.
  • Develops and maintains a coordinated team approach with providers, nurses and allied health personnel.
  • Facilitates and monitors timely discharges and transfers between units and other facilities.
  • In the event of nursing staff shortage, would take a patient assignment.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with all essential personnel to maintain daily operations.
  • Provides input into performance and competency assessments.
  • Ensures appropriate use of hospital resources by reviewing all patients admitted to the hospital evaluating appropriateness of admission using approved criteria, status (inpatient, observation, etc.) to maximize patient flow and continuity of care.
  • Report pertinent information to management and administration.
  • Ensures that employee injury reports are filled out appropriately and staff are seen by ER physician as needed.
  • Responds to codes, traumas, and rapid responses.
  • Responds to and assists in de-escalating patient concerns.
  • Ensure security reports are completed.
  • Learn proficiency in EPIC documentation in Periop, ER, and MS.
  • Positively communicates management and administration decisions.
  • Create and maintain an environment which promotes mutual trust, acceptance, recognition, and respect.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and is available as a clinical resource to all staff by providing direction and problem-solving to operational issues.
  • Participates in performance improvement projects focused on organizational and department goals.
  • Interprets hospital policies and regulations for staff members, providers, patients, and visitors ensuring compliance with state, federal and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Provides pharmacy support for nursing units when pharmacy staff are not in-house.
  • Attends all required meetings and in-services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations

Location: Jefferson County Health Center · Medical Surgical & Emergency Room
Schedule: Full Time, Nights, Four 10-hour shifts

Salary : $60,158 - $97,401
