Position Title: School-Based Mental Health Professional

Reports To: Manager – School-Based Mental Health Services Location: Specific JICS School (as assigned)

Position Summary:
School-Based Mental Health Professionals at JICS are key members of the student support team, providing direct mental health services and social-emotional support to students. Their role centers on supporting academic success, personal development, and emotional well-being for all students, while delivering IEP-designated metal health services to students with identified needs. These professionals work collaboratively with families, educators, and school leaders to ensure a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

While school counselors and mental health professionals offer short-term support, referrals to community providers are made when long-term therapeutic services are required.

Primary Responsibilities:
Mental Health Services & IEP Support

  • Provide mental health services as outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including minutes and service (As assigned based on qualifications)
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions addressing emotional regulation, social skills, anxiety, trauma, and other relevant topics.
  • Support with the development/ monitor behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and mental health goals in collaboration with school teams.
  • Maintain accurate, timely service logs and documentation in compliance with special education and district policies.

Crisis Response & Safety Planning

  • Provide crisis intervention and support as needed, including conducting risk assessments and developing safety plans.
  • Respond effectively to student mental health emergencies in collaboration with school administration and SBMH leadership.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Work closely with teachers, special education staff, deans, and administrators to support student success.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to provide input on eligibility, service planning, and progress monitoring.
  • Partner with families and caregivers to support student growth and connect them with community resources when extended care is necessary.

Academic, Personal, and Social Support

  • Support students in developing study habits, academic goals, and personal growth plans.
  • Offer short-term counseling support related to peer relationships, emotional well-being, family concerns, and development.
  • Provide skill-building around conflict resolution, decision-making, and stress management.

Professional Practice & Ethics

  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with ethical standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, remaining informed of current best practices in school-based mental health.
  • Recognize the limits of school-based services and refer students/families to outside mental health providers as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field (or enrolled in an equivalent graduate-level program)
  • Valid Colorado license or certification (e.g., LPC, LCSW, School Counselor, School Psychologist).
  • Experience working with adolescents in a school or clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of IEP processes, mental health best practices, and school-based systems of support.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and cultural competency skills.

Pay: $45,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
