Description
This is a full-time position with a full benefit package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability, retirement, ATO (Accrued Time Off), holiday pay, and other supplemental plans.
The Phlebotomist will be responsible for providing a variety of patient care service including drawing blood and providing excellent customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Performs a variety of duties necessary for the patient care of Jackson Parish Hospital, under the supervision of the laboratory department manager. This position does not supervise.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform patient venipunctures with 2 proper patient identifiers.
- Follows NACCLS Guidelines for phlebotomy procedures.
- Properly perform EKGs, copy and scan results into LIS.
- Assists and help whenever possible when requested to work over.
- At all times protects patient health information; follows HIPA guidelines.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
- Attends department meetings and educational in-services to maintain professional competency. Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training when necessary.
- Responds to all emergency situations within the facility and provides Rapid Response duties or procedures required for treatment.
- Adheres to all Jackson Parish Hospital policies, procedures, safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated.
- Adheres to department and hospital dress code policy and procedure. Professional appearance is mandatory, this includes, but not limited to: uniform/scrubs – must be neat and clean, hair- neat, clean and appropriate for work, cologne/body odor – must not be offensive, fingernails – must be neat and clean. Artificial nails of any kind are not allowed, footwear- must be a medical professional or tennis shoe.
- Keeps work areas clean and neat, free of clutter
- Keeps all supplies and phlebotomy trays in order and watches for expired supplies and tubes.
- Checking and monitoring email daily is required. Notifications of events, deadlines, policy changes, etc. is communicated through email.
- Performs all/any additional duties as assigned by the laboratory department manager.

Requirements
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Training from accredited phlebotomy program or equivalent with certificate of completion
- Clinical experience preferred in phlebotomy/ EKG/ UDS but not required
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Certified by a nationally recognized phlebotomy board or licensed as a laboratory assistant by the state of Louisiana
- Valid driver’s license and proof of car insurance is required
- BLS required within 6 months of hire
LANGUAGE SKILLS/ REQUIREMENTS
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Strong written and verbal skills.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.
- Professional/Courteous rapport with patients, families, co-workers, physicians and visitors.
- Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to work long hours between breaks and meals may be required.
- Basic Computer skills

Ability to lab equipment, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, computer, printer, and scanner.
