Position: Lead Custodian
Reports to: Facilities Director
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Lead Custodian performs a wide range of custodial and light maintenance duties to ensure the overall cleanliness, safety, functionality, and appearance of a facility. Working under the supervision of the Facilities Director or their designee, the Lead Custodian also oversees a custodial team, coordinates daily operations, responds to maintenance needs, and ensures that facilities are prepared for regular use and special events. This position requires sound judgment, leadership skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Oversee and participate in the daily cleaning and maintenance of assigned buildings and grounds
Maintain supply inventory, place orders for custodial/maintenance materials, and ensure proper storage and tracking
Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenish supplies, and maintain general hygiene standards throughout the facility
Vacuum, shampoo, mop, dust, and wash surfaces including windows, walls, doors, fixtures, and flooring
Respond to and complete maintenance requests using a work order system
Set up and break down furniture and equipment for scheduled meetings, events, or activities
Move and arrange furniture, supplies, and equipment as needed
Perform minor repairs including painting, carpentry, and light equipment servicing
Ensure compliance with recycling, waste disposal, and safety protocols
Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and support health and safety requirements
Lead seasonal cleanup efforts and ensure readiness of facilities for operational cycles
Supervise, train, and support custodial staff; assign tasks and follow up on job performance
Assist in the scheduling of custodial shifts and overtime
Respond to emergency maintenance calls and after-hours facility needs, including snow and ice removal
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform related duties as assigned
Assist in groundskeeping and seasonal outdoor maintenance
Ensure equipment is cleaned, maintained, and stored properly
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent
3–5 years of experience in custodial operations, facilities maintenance, or related work
Prior supervisory experience is preferred
Working knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, and safety practices
Ability to operate floor machines, vacuums, snow blowers, and other custodial equipment
Basic carpentry, painting, and maintenance skills
Strong organizational and time management abilities
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Comfortable using computers and standard software (email, spreadsheets, work order systems)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.)
Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and reaching
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and indoor/outdoor settings
