Job Description

Institutes of Health (IOH) – San Diego, CA, Part-Time (20-32 hours per week, with opportunity for additional hours and travel to other locations based on business needs)

At Institutes of Health (IOH), we specialize in treating patients with brain injuries, chronic pain, PTSD, and complex orthopedic conditions within the Workers’ Compensation system. Our model goes beyond symptom management. We focus on restoring function, independence, and quality of life.

We are seeking a passionate Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) to join our San Diego team—someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced, and purpose-driven setting.

What You’ll Do

As an Athletic Trainer at IOH, you will play a key role in helping patients rebuild strength, function, and confidence through structured, evidence-based programming.

Core Responsibilities

Perform functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) as part of return-to-work programming

Lead and implement strength and conditioning programs (group and individual)

Facilitate work hardening programs to support return-to-work readiness

Lead functional mobility groups focused on movement, stability, and endurance

Provide and support gym and aquatic therapy programming as appropriate

Support community reintegration activities to promote independence and functional carryover

Implement individualized therapeutic exercise programs based on patient needs

Provide motivation, education, guidance, and support to patients

Provide patient education that includes but is not limited to:

Pertinent findings of assessment

Treatment expectations

Importance of compliance with program participation

Health, lifestyle, and wellness education for long-term outcomes

Maintain appropriate progression of patients based on clinical protocols and functional goals

Additional Expectations

Travel to other IOH clinic locations as needed to support patient care, program coverage, and operational needs

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field

Current Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) in good standing

Certification in CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS)

Bilingual In Spanish Required

Experience in rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, or return-to-work programs preferred

Experience with functional capacity evaluations (FCE), work hardening, or occupational medicine preferred

Experience or willingness to support aquatic therapy and community-based programming

Strong knowledge of human movement, injury prevention, and exercise progression

Ability to lead both group and individual sessions effectively

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

Strong organizational and time-management skills

Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care

Ability and willingness to travel between clinic locations as needed
