Summary: Assist with and/or coordinate the corrective and preventative maintenance of IHS facilities to positively impact the service of and provide for the safety of guests, volunteers and staff.  Resolve immediate operational and/or safety concerns as it relates to the maintenance and upkeep of equipment and property.  


Essential Functions: 

  1. Professionally interact with, support internal IHS policies and carry out daily site specific and organizational procedures that create a culture of hospitality, trust and respect.

  2. Clean, care for, maintain and service the service centers’ equipment and tools to ensure the safety and availability of equipment needed for day to day operations.

  3. Provide minor repairs and assistance with the repair and/or installation of various items, systems and/or components (including but not limited to broken windows, bathroom/shower maintenance, roofs, building structures, floors, hand rails, stairs, lighting systems, electrical units, fabrication of wood/metal, etc.).

  4. Assist with painting tasks to maintain attractive facilities and minimize damage to walls, stairwells, etc. 

  5. Perform grounds related functions for the purpose of preserving grounds in a healthy, attractive and safe condition

  6. Ensure adequate supplies for maintenance are ordered and are stored properly for safe and easy access by maintenance and operations teams.

  7. Provide supervision, training and assistance to other personnel, in-house or community volunteers to support the completion of work activities in maintenance, shelter beautification and sanitation projects/assignments.

  8. Assist with the retrieval and pick up of community donations when necessary.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of plumbing, electrical and carpentry methods, practices, tools and materials used in building maintenance and repair specialties.

  2. Understand basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions to adhere to safety practices and safe handling of hazardous materials.

  3. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on conflict resolution. 

  4. Possess personal qualities of integrity, patience and commitment to mission.

  5. Able to work independently, is flexible and able to multitask to meet deadlines; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.


Required Education and Experience: 

  1. HS Diploma or GED equivalent.

  2. Two to three years of maintenance experience. 

  3. Valid Driver’s License and clean traffic abstract.

  4. Basic computer skills; able to navigate google email, Microsoft applications and databases.


Preferred Education and Experience: 

  1. Experience working in group living settings or prior experience working in homeless shelter environment with knowledge of homelessness and the issues associated with it; mental health and substance abuse issues. 

  2. Three to five years of building maintenance experience.

  3. CPI certified or able to pass at IHS; CPR and 1st Aid certified or able to certify through IHS.
