Title: Sr. Azure/SQL DBA

Position Summary

The Senior Database Administrator provides technical leadership for enterprise Microsoft data platforms across Azure PaaS and IaaS. This role designs, secures, operates, and modernizes Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines, with accountability for reliability, performance, recovery, automation, and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and administer Azure SQL Database, elastic pools, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines.
• Own availability, capacity, security, patching, backup, recovery, and database lifecycle management.
• Build and test resilient solutions using failover groups, geo-replication, zone redundancy, Always On availability groups, and point-in-time recovery.
• Monitor, tune, and troubleshoot workloads using Azure Monitor, Foglight, execution plans, metrics, alerts, and diagnostic views.
• Lead incident resolution and root-cause analysis for performance, blocking, connectivity, replication, storage, and failover issues.
• Plan and execute database migrations and modernization, including assessment, testing, cutover, validation, and rollback.
• Automate administration with T-SQL, PowerShell, Azure CLI, infrastructure as code, source control, and deployment pipelines.
• Partner across technology teams to define standards, optimize cost, maintain runbooks, mentor staff, and provide escalation and on-call support.

Required Qualifications

• 7 years of database administration or engineering experience, including production support of Azure database services.
• Advanced expertise in SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines.
• Strong T-SQL, indexing, execution-plan analysis, Query Store, concurrency, and performance-tuning skills.
• Proven experience with high availability, disaster recovery, backup and restore, migrations, upgrades, and patching.
• Knowledge of Azure networking, identity, security, monitoring, and cost management.
• Proficiency with PowerShell, Azure CLI, or similar automation tools; familiarity with infrastructure as code and CI/CD.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation, leadership, and communication skills; bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft Azure database certification; experience with Azure DevOps, 24×7 operations, and related Microsoft data services.
