Position OverviewAbout The Award

The Sanders Scholars program supports undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Kansas who wish to learn about librarianship through hands-on, mentored project work. The program provides up to 300 paid hours and emphasizes professional development, public scholarship, and career exploration in libraries and cultural institutions.

About The Project

This position supports Phase 3 of the Ngäbe Digital Project, a cultural preservation and digital access initiative focused on Panama’s largest Indigenous group, the Ngäbe. Earlier project phases completed field digitization in Panama and prepared a digital corpus of Indigenous publications and related materials. Phase 3 focuses on transforming these digitized materials into a public-facing digital repository and exhibition.

The Sanders Scholar will contribute to the project Preserving Indigenous Panamanian Voices: A Digital Exhibit of Ngäbe Cultural Publications. The student will help curate and interpret two pioneering Ngäbe publications produced by Acción Cultural Ngäbe (ACUN), a cultural action initiative dedicated to preserving, promoting, and projecting Ngäbe culture.Job Description20% - Work with digitized Ngäbe publications.

20% - Create bilingual metadata in English and Spanish.

20% - Research themes such as Indigenous identity, literacy, social justice, land rights, and cultural preservation.

20% - Write short interpretive essays for the digital exhibit.

20% - Assist in building and launching a digital exhibition using Omeka S.Required Qualifications1. Interest in libraries, digital humanities, Indigenous studies, Latin American studies, or related fields, as evidenced by application materials.

  • Reading knowledge of Spanish or willingness to learn, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience learning new skills and accepting intellectual and technical challenges, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Ownership, organization, and follow-through skills, as evidenced by application materials.Preferred Qualifications1. Experience with digital tools such as Omeka, HTML, CSS, Git, or Photoshop, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience with structured data formats such as CSV, JSON, or XML, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, as evidenced by application materials.Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
  • This is an hourly/non-exempt position.
