Job Purpose

The UBMS Program Coordinator fosters a learning environment that encompasses academic achievement and college preparation that centers around STEM related fields. The coordinator promotes the vision and skill level for successful graduation at the secondary level and success with college matriculation and post-secondary completion.

Supervisory Authority

The Program Coordinator will supervise approximately 3-12 wage employees to include tutors, teachers, and counselors.

Nature And Scope

The Program Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the various components of the Upward Bound Mathematics and Science (UBMS) program which falls under the TRIO Programs with the Department of Education. The UBMS program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in science, technology and mathematics to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in STEM disciplines. The Upward Bound Math and Science program at Howard University serves 52 students from selected schools in DC and Prince George’s County in grades 9 through 12. TRIO Programs are located within the School of Education and the Program Coordinator for Upward Bound Mathematics and Science reports directly to the Director of the UBMS Program. This is a grant position that is fully funded until August 31,2027. The grant can be renewed for 5-year intervals at the conclusion of the current grant period.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Coordinating with target high school staff in Washington, DC and Prince George’s County to continually recruit and retain 52 program participants each year.
  • Assist in the identification, recruitment and selection of project participants;
  • Planning, coordinating, and implementing the program's services, including Saturday Academy sessions during the academic year and 6-week summer program for each cohort.
  • These services include: academic instruction and tutoring, SAT & ACT preparation, career exploration, financial literacy education, cultural enrichment, community service, assistance completing college admissions and financial aid applications, and on-campus residential programs;
  • Maintaining documentation of services in electronic database and participant files;
  • Assisting in the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of summer instructors, tutors and summer residential staff as well as student volunteers.
  • Engaging with other UBMS staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery.
  • Assisting Program Director with preparation and submission of evaluations and reports, including the Department of Education Annual Performance Report
  • Developing and nurturing partnerships with faculty and staff of Howard University and DCPS and PGCPS School districts to enhance the program's services.
  • Coordinate and supervise the monthly Saturday Academic Sessions and Summer Component activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise college counseling sessions throughout the academic year.
  • Track senior participants' college and scholarship applications submissions and provide assistance where needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, science, engineering, psychology, education, school counseling or another related field. Experience working with underserved youth population (ages 13-21). Strong classroom management skills

Some evening and weekend hours required during the academic year, and extended hours during the summer component.

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education, social work, counseling or related fields
  • Knowledge of student development
  • Prior TRIO experience
  • Ability to effectively design math and science curriculum
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and conduct intensive science enrichment activities.
  • 2 years or more experience working with youth
