Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with ECU Health Medical Center, provides clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for hospital patients and clinic patients.
The mission of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education, and by creating new knowledge through research.
Our core goals serve as the guiding framework for the Department’s pathology services and education efforts:
Job Duties
Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Sets up experiments as prescribed by principal investigator. May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation. Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases. Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator. Performs basic lab maintenance responsibilities including glassware washing, solution making and laboratory organization. The research technician will be responsible for keeping track of stocks of essential items like personal protective equipment, reagents, and other lab supplies. Ensure lab equipment and freezers are in working order. Help maintain an inventory of reagents, supplies, and equipment in the lab. Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions. This position serves as the safety representative and HIPAA compliance representative. This position is responsible for ensuring all lab safety weekly/monthly/yearly checks are performed in each working lab, which includes pathology teaching and specimen containment, in addition to research and genomics labs. Annually coordinates inspections and serve as the liaison with Prospective Health to schedule inspections and address any deficiencies. Ensure HIPAA compliance by managing all locked cabinets and labs that contain anything patient related, and responsible for proper signage and monitoring of these spaces weekly. Position also assures that all information is stored on a HIPAA compliant server in Pathology or in locked cabinets. Keeps accurate and complete records in the form of established notebooks for Experimental Write-Ups, Write-Ups in Progress, Cell Log, Freezer Cell Log, and Daily Log. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
