Job Description
Classification Title:
OPS Genetic Counseling Assistant
Classification Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant office experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Job Description:
Assist in triaging and managing genetic counseling/testing inquiries and referrals.
Schedule patients for genetic counseling appointments and obtain relevant records and information for the genetic counselors prior to these appointments.
Answer patient questions about the genetic counseling appointment and testing process.
Coordinate genetic testing samples, including packaging and shipping of genetic testing kits.
Assist with informed consent by sending genetic test consent forms to telemedicine patients and ensuring all signed test consent forms are uploaded to the patients' medical record.
Assist with insurance coordination and completion of insurance billing paperwork, when required by the genetic testing laboratory or patient's insurance company.
Work closely with various genetic testing laboratories to track testing progress and results, and provide relevant information (such as clinical documentation and insurance information) as needed for test orders.
Assure the timely arrival of test results and notify the genetic counselors about any problems or delays in testing.
Sharing positive testing letters, family letters, test reports, resources/support information, and genetic counselor notes to patients and families electronically or by mail.
Faxing genetic counselor notes and test reports to referring providers outside the institution.
Enter, update, and maintain all patient encounters, information, and test results within the genetic counseling clinical database.
Participate in genetics-related research projects as they arise.
Other duties as assigned by the genetic counselors.
Collect family health histories/generate pedigrees for patients.
Disclose negative genetic testing results to patients over the phone under the direct supervision of a genetic counselor.
Shadow genetic counselors during in-person and telemedicine patient appointments.
Expected Salary:
$14-$16 per hour; commensurate with education and/or experience
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant office experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree with an interest in genetic counseling, genetics, aortic disease, and/or counseling
Knowledge of biological, medical, nursing, or similar field of study
Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Experience With Epic (or Other Electronic Medical Records Systems)
Excellent customer service skills
High attention to detail
Willingness to learn
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Strong organization and multitasking skills
Genetic Counselors will not be considered for this position, as this is an early-career position that is more ideal for candidates taking a gap year before graduate school or with an interest in hereditary cardiovascular care.
