Job Description

Under general supervision operates light and medium duty motorized equipment used in the maintenance of fields, roads, and similar areas in all kinds of weather.

Responsibilities

  • The Motor Equipment Operator I safely operates light and medium motorized vehicles to support campus transportation services.
  • Responsibilities include performing basic preventative maintenance checks, following all safety procedures, completing transportation logs, and providing reliable, customer-focused service.
  • Work is performed under direct supervision in accordance with established transportation protocols and schedules.

Vehicle Operations

  • Operates medium- and heavy-duty commercial passenger vehicles, including shuttle buses, vans, cars, and utility carts, in accordance with assigned routes, schedules, and safety protocols.
  • Provides transportation for athletic team travel, student groups, and university-sponsored activities.
  • Provides chauffeur and courier services as assigned, ensuring safe, timely, and professional transport of passengers, documents, and materials to designated locations.
  • Ensures safe loading and unloading of passengers, equipment, and luggage.
  • Follows all Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines, university policies, and safety regulations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; reports mechanical issues immediately.
  • Cleans and sanitizes interior passenger areas, including seats, handrails, windows, floors, and the driver’s area, to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Performs restroom cleaning on buses, including disinfecting fixtures, restocking supplies, and ensuring waste is emptied and properly disposed of.
  • Conducts routine exterior cleaning as needed and reports any sanitation, odor, or maintenance concerns to supervisors promptly.
  • Adheres to all traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and university safety protocols.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies or incidents while in service.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Provides courteous, professional service to all passengers.
  • Communicates route changes, delays, or concerns to dispatch or supervisor promptly.
  • Assist passengers with mobility needs when required.
  • Represents the Transportation Department in a professional manner.

Operational Support

  • Completes daily logs, mileage reports, fuel records, and incident reports accurately.
  • Supports transportation needs for university events, ceremonies, and athletics.
  • Works during evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as assigned.
  • Provides essential transportation during inclement weather and university closures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure smooth departmental operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Commercial Class B Driver's License in the State of Maryland with passenger endorsement. With a clean driving record.
  • Ability to successfully complete university driver safety training.
  • Demonstrated experience operating motorized vehicles in a professional or structured environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., sit for extended periods, and assist passengers when needed.
  • Strong knowledge of safe driving practices and vehicle operation procedures.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in fast-paced or high-traffic environments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow schedules, directions, and established procedures.
  • Commitment to safety, customer service, and teamwork.

Conditions Of Employment

  • Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine their ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Employees in this job class must maintain the required valid driver’s license with no more than five (5) points on their driving record.
  • Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with university policy and state regulations.
  • This position requires the ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, during inclement weather, and during university closures or emergency situations.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon compliance with all transportation safety standards, training requirements, and university policies.
